Where to buy puppies

Don't go to a store. Puppy mill puppies are typically sold at all pet stores, or puppies from local breeders (hobby breeders or backyard breeders) that aren't exactly what one would consider reputable.
If you have a specific breed in mind check the AKC website for breeders. It is good to get from a breeder that shows and health tests all dogs in their lines, not just somewhere in the lines there is champion blah blah blah. Many breeds have specific health concerns depending on breed that should be tested for and ruled out. A reputable breeder would be able to provide this to you.
Otherwise go to a breed specific rescue for the dog breed of choice or any other rescue, if you and the family are against adopting from a shelter situation. Most rescues have dogs in foster homes with families. So they know a great deal about the dog's temperment, personality, house trained etc.

North Shore Animal League is great. However, about one mile down the road is the North Hempstead Animal Shelter and they put the dogs to sleep if they dont get adopted vs. North Shore who doesn't put any dogs to sleep.

No matter what they say all their dogs come from puppy mills that don't care about the quality of dog they output. They are in it for the money. The vets that inspect them are also in it for the money. I helped run a dog rescue upstate and I adopted my 2 dogs and they are wonderful.
You can adopt a lot of puppies from rescues all over the area. I highly recommend north shore.
So please don't buy from a pet store.. i have done many rescues from puppy mills and dog flea markets in the south. My Boston Terrier is a rescue from a puppy mill that sells to mainly north eastern pet stores and she has a lot of health problems. I bought her when she was 1 month old! That is one month too short to sell. Many of these places will lie about the puppies age and in pet stores they are actually younger then they say. Its not good for a dog to be away from the mother before 2 months. Due to that my dog had seperation problems.
Don't believe the hype that dogs from rescues are bad dogs. I had that thought till until I worked at a rescue and now its the only way I'll get a dog.
My family/friends tell me all the time my lab/huskey rescue is the best dog they've ever seen. Also generally mixes are healthier then pure breads due to the bad genes getting bred out.
So please don't buy from a pet store.. while you think you are getting a dog out of a cage and rescuing it.. you are just making 100's more dogs suffer by having these people profit.

A, for every breed there are tons of rescue groups, take a look at them. I know if you look at some of the sites you will find many dogs you will love that need a home :dog:

The dog I got from the "Reputable Breeder" turned out to be a nut ball of which when I contacted the breeder with the problems, she insisted that it was us who were the problem not the dog..
The "Backyard Breeder" became my Best Friend in live and her dog had no issues and lived a healthy happy live.
One of the dogs I got from the ASPCA had to go back to them because of some issues that I was not prepared to deal with and they were very gracious about the whole thing. The other one lived with us for over 16 years and was by far the love of our lives. Will never have another like him...
The dogs I've adopted from NS & AC&C have all been great dogs, including the 2 pitties I share my home with now..
Yes I'm that old, I've outlived many! But then again I've always had more then 1.

my family also has had great experiences adopting from NSAL.
the other shelter drcooper is talking about is at the end of my street. unfortunately it's kind of hidden so not many people know about it. the few times that i've visited, they've had amazing dogs that i wanted to take home.. i wish i could if i had the time.

Not every one has the option to adopt. I was rejected by both north shore and the little shelter. They said a mid twenties guy that rents and has a room mate is not a good place for a dog.
I ended up buying my dog.
If you're going to buy, buy from a breeder and not a pet store.
My pet store dog has cost me twice in vet bills what a pure bred from a breeder would have cost. Between the incontinence, skin issues, food allergies, etc..

there is a place out east on route 25 i believe in riverhead which i think is a great place.i got my dog there.everytime i went in the vet was there checking on the dogs.every time.i went in there around 8 times after my hunting day before i purchased her.i paid 450 and she had her first round of shots.the only bad thing i could say is that they removed her thumbs. my vet told me alot of places do this cause some dogs have problems of them being ripped of while caged.they are very clean and the guy showed me where any sick dogs stayed.they were apart from each other in very clean pens.while in there a guy was giving the puppies meds a woman was sitting in a chair holding a sick weimeran petting him and talking to him.thats what made me finally decide to get her.
