Controversial but realistic observation of changes on MR

The whole "This weeks great thread" category bugs me quite a bit for numerous reasons;

A) Some people and other preferred members (assumingly so, but not sure who selects the preferred threads) have threads up there after only a few posts on fairly basic topics will be up there, but of course this thread will become large and continuous due to its placement via a "self fufilling prophecy"

B) Why not give some objective cirteria such as; how many times viewed, comments, member voting, ANYTHING

IMO it really hurts the community and almost forms a class system and ignores quality view poits, opinions, topics that should be disected, for a milllionth view of some guys chalices or acans for 3 months

NO HATE just an opinion thats been on my mind since its been introduced

JL, I hope you filled out the survey as the survey is exactly the forum to express these opinions. They will be listened to.

One note: often the threads that get the most views and the most comments are the threads where people are arguing with one another about things that are only tangentially related to reefing. Those are certainly not the threads that should be highlighted as "great".

Agree with JL - It's just very subjective on what posts goes on there.

I used to read RC every day. Then after about 6 months of learning everything it had to offer, i got really bored of the same old basic threads (ich, cyno, gha,show me your...) so i started coming here exclusively.

I have nothing but good things to say about MR. But I also agree with JL. You should (only in this case) take a page from RC and put the top 5 threads to a vote for the thread of the month. Really makes the most democratic sense - ya?

come on man, lets not make it a personal issue, I seldom post at the moment due to work schedule but see some good threads that get diluted by the massive amount of "ich", "nitrate" etc. questions. The point is there should be some objective criteria, perhaps much like the way you can vote stars for a thread, you could "click" or indicate somehow that the current thread your reading is great. The thread with the most indications is labeled the "great" thread of the week. Otherwise it really doesnt serve the purpose it was probably invented to do. I do think it was a really good idea, just needs to be tweaked a bit

Each Vendor can Mod there own thread. In this case the vendor decided to close it.

We have been working on a "democratic" way to have threads be featured. It isn't as easy as it sounds and at the moment the best way for a member to get a thread featured is to ask a mod to do it. I think the mods just pick things where a good discussion is warranted.
