no problem well the water itself at 8lbs a gallon is 440lbs some of that won't count because water will be displaced from the gravel but gravel is heavy so you are still going to have around 500 lbs. try sitting on the stand bounce up and down if it seems sturdy it will probably be fine. Posting a pic would also help.

You should always support all sides of the tanks. Not doing that is the easiest way to cause stress fractures which will lead to a cracked tanked. Some companies don't even cover their warranties if you do not use their stand.

listen guys I had a 45 high 36x12x24 on a stand that's about 24 inches made for like a 20 gallon, plus I had about 50 lbs of crushed coral and about 60 lbs of rock probably more and I never had a problem it was on the stand for about 1 year maybe a year 1/2 only reason I took it off was because I got a legit pine stand..wanted it for looks. A picture would definitely help though man and building a DIY stand could be a good idea unless you are not too good at that then you might end up building something worse than what you had lol. Guys remember he said it was only an inch short..it's not that big of a deal 1/2 inch on each side it actually is still holding the corners because of the plastic trim/brace

I would not depend on the corner plastic frame to hold up the tank, all 4 corners of the tank should be sitting on a solid surface to be sure the glass won't crack. Be sure to level the stand as well :)

Use the plywood as suggested above if you can't change to a proper stand.

Triggerman, if you had to pay for the damages to his house/apt from 55g worth of water damage, maybe a possible fire from SW not mixing with electric as it seeps through the walls and then buy him a new setup would you still tell him to put the tank on a smaller stand?

The bracing is pretty much only a half inch. The sides should be supported and the tank should be level otherwise there is a pretty good chance the tank will crack or leak from the seams. Might not happen right away but it will happen. Your just playing russian roulette setting it up any other way.

I had half my kitchen and my living room flooded when my 40g tank cracked on me because of a pump, alot of water going through the ceiling to the floor below me. Thankfully they had a tin ceiling and it didn't short out any electrical work. Had to refinish the wood floors in both rooms because of warping which cost me a pretty penny. Im not even going to mention getting all the animals safe and alive. I wouldn't want to do it again nor wish it on my enemy and i had it easy.

+1...DA Fish, is your 47" stand, a 'real' tank stand, or just something you think (hope), can handle the weight?

yea FROM A PUMP not from having a stand an inch short..I didn't tell him to do anything I said post a pic so we can see what kind of stand it is to see if it is sturdy. The corners don't matter because the whole tank is being supported except for that 1/2 " on each side. Like I said I had a 36" 45 high on a stand that was like 24" for over a year and it was perfectly fine it was a pedestal stand. I believe it was from a 30gal cube.

He also said it was a freshwater tank with some decorations not 200lbs of rock.

Does anyone know a legit story of where someone had a shorter stand and it exploded like you are all worried about? Has it happened to anyone? I am curious because I have seen others do it as well there's a guy who just posted something before he got a 72 bow w/ alot of rock on a 46 bow stand with no problems and that's SIX inches hanging off each side.
dunghan99 go look at his post about wondering how much his corals are worth he got pics of it in there.

Heres one for ya. How about when starting a new tank you just make sure in the first place to get the right sized stand for it BEFORE you set it up. Youre going to have enough stress at times with issues- the stand size is something in my eyes that should never be an issue in the first place.

Oh and for some on here water is 8.35 pounds a gallon so its actually if 55 gallons of water itll weigh 459 1/4 pounds.

Get an appropriate stand and check that worry off the list. JMO:smile:

You made the right decision.

smart azz.. I wasn't saying he should do anything all I said was I had a stand that was much shorter than my tank and it was fine..it was also a pretty good stand. Not telling everyone to go buy a small stand but it did look good also pedastal style everyone should check out the thread I mentioned before, you will see what I mean
