Yellow Tangs Aggressive???

My yellow tang is very aggressive towards my new tomato clown and purple antheas. Is this normal? I think he killed the previous clown i had in the tank. He leaves the mandarin alone. Any suggestions other than rearranging the rock?

thats y. its too small for a tang and other fish. its like putting 2 dogs in a small cage, they could have been the best of buds before but in that small space it doesn't matter.

55 is too small for 3 fish? i am going to do the rock over today i am thinking he is territorial becasue he has been in the tank three weeks

My YT is a beast in my 180, so with your size tank, it's going to be more of an issue if the Tang is well established. Typically, if the new fish is fast enough, it will evade the Tang and eventually, the tang will calm down. More importantly, do not add another tang.

The tomato has been hiding behind my fan for a few days getting more confident the anthias not so much. the tang has been in there 3 weeks the other two were put in last thursday.

Yous should try to alwayd add the tangs last, Or at least have a more than 1 go in at the same time, The tang should leave them alone, it is showing that it is the boss of the tank.

I figured he was just showing senority. I just dont want him attacking every fish that i put in and i dont want to have to rearrange the rock evertime i add fish. O appreciate all the feedback

Yellow tangs have variable temperaments. Some are very peaceful, some are incorrigible. I think they also have an issue with aggressive clownfish. My YT and my maroon clown were always at each other. They are now permanently scarred- a broken stripe on the clown from a laceration (grew back without a scar, but just maroon..the stripe didn't come back) and a shortened dorsal on the tang. Most of the time they were the only fish in the tank. Now I added some fish, and everybody is happy...no aggression at all.

i rearrnged the rock last night. the anthias was eating and swimming this morning clown still a little hesitant

Can you give the YT a time out? Place it in another tank or sump for a week. This way the other fish can settle in and then add the YT back. Can even rearrange the rock again after removing the YT.

it seemed to quiet down a ;ittle. he doesnt bother the antias much and the clown has found the ane06ne and wont leave it EVER. When i feed them he pops out grabs food and is back in the anemone before he can even close his mouth. the tang will stay infront of the clown and hang out daring it to come out. does the anemone protect the clown as well as feel good?

Just depends...my YT was a little nervous at first but now he is very chill.

I would say that the tomato clown will be the next problem, as it grows it will be more aggressive, and not allow any newcomers.
Did the LFS tell you that...and the fact that purple anthias are one of the hardest to keep? If they didn't warn you , then you might have to do your own research before purchasing any more livestock.
BTW...Is your tank established enough to support a mandarin and anemone?

yes the anemone and mandarin are doing well. at first i was nervous about the mandarin he was gettitng very skinny, he has looked a lot better the past two weeks. the anthias doesnt eat the food i throw in but he is always nippi9ng at thing i assume are the copepods

Thanks for all the insight. They all seem to get along now Tang is still the "King". Clown doenst leave his anemone just bought two Firefis Gobies they chill and love life.
