I have a couple of them, one for quite a long time. They're not really aggressive and should get along with the Purple Tang without any problems. They do need a good size tank, as they get to be a good size. They're very similar to the Orange Shoulder Tang but not quite as large.

Adding the Lt. to the yellow tang's tank is going to pose the same issues. it's the same either way. The Lt. is usually pretty mild mannered so I wouldn't be too worried about him doing anything, I'd be more concerned with the purple.

How big is the tank?

If you have an issue, try placing a mirror at one end of the tank. I just placed a yellow in with my two purples and they started beating the crap out of the yellow.
I put the mirror up for two days and now they all swim together. The mirror takes the attention off the the new arrival and gives it a chance to get acclimated. Just my opinion.

John McCain, survived in a vietnamese POW camp for years does that sound like something you would like to do?

You could also live in the trunk of a car if you were fed and bathed every so often but that doesn't mean you would be happy about it either.

Just because they fit in the tank doesn't mean they should be kept there. Tangs wander over huge spans of reef every day in the wild and a 55 or 75 gallon tank is just a tiny drop of water compared to what they are used to. I'm not saying you have to build a few 1,000 gallon system to house tangs but when fish are happy and unstressed they tend to do a lot better. I would consider a 150gal the absolut minimum for some of the smaller tangs and 300+ for some of the larger ones.

lots of people smoke crack and shoot heroin...

I'm not some radical animal rights activist, my reasoning is that even though everyone says "they're doing fine" how do you really know? Most people think that because the fish is upright and swimming it's fine and that is just not the case. You will achieve better results long term by properly accommodating your fish.
