I have a fuge and I dont have a fuge. I chose to not add sand in the 40g sump I made. The pods have a fighting chance I gueess. I have macro and 30 to 40 pounds of live rock in the sump and 20 mangroves but no sand, I planted the mangroves in large gravel.

You don't need sand, it is just something you can have. As long as you have something where "all families" of pods can grow without any predators...

I stopped using sand after I accidentally poisoned fish. I can be clumsy and once upon a time I messed around with the sump and i was to rough, the sand released chemicals that poisoned the fish. Had to remove all fish and throw them in fresh saltwater until I performed what turned out to be like a 75% water change.

Since i did not add mud or live sand in this one I try not to call it a fuge bc the experts may jump in and scold me for it lol.
