I think we need to add this animal to the list of: coral eating only therefore cannot survive if held captive and must be protected at all costs even if it does harm the reef by eating the live coral? Or can anyone explain why or under what critteria, {pun intended} this creature would not fall into the guidelines for MAC protection?

Because MAC deals with animals in the aquarium trade and the Crown of Thorns star does not fall in that category.

I can order one{Crown o Stars}.....and I have heard that they have come in as mis. Starfish and babys have come in on on corals /live rock orders over the years....How many of a type of animal needs to be taken for that species to be included for ban consideration? And do you have any data on the numbers of certain butterfly fish taken for the hobby? If only ten of a "Ban" type of fish are taken a year, is that fish in need of protection?

All kinds of things come in on live rock- you can't regulate that very easily. The import numbers situation has already been addressed in a previous post to naesco in the "Hurting" thread.

I cant find any numbers in the "HURTING" thread , with regaurd to just how many of these twelve butterflie Species are collected each year? Let me also take a moment to state for the record,that I have ageed with almost all of Mary's efforts with industry reform and the efforts She has made to get more money to the collectors instead of the shippers etc. It just this issue of the "ban" ,that our opinions are vastly apart.

What does this thread have to do with the Crown of Thorns starfish then Kalkbreath? Is this just some lame example that you picked up on to "champion" because it is a corralivore?

Look. I'm getting quite tired of going round and round. To start with, Mary didn't "champion" this cause. When MAC first hit me with the idea, I disagreed with it. However, they don't like you to just say "No, you can't do that". You have to give them some alternative. That's when I suggested the 3 criteria and they put it in the Core Standards. At that point, a committee was going to be formed and I was going to be on it. I thought it would be a good idea to get hobbyist input because they seem to always be supportive of the idea of a list, so I started the original thread. And man, am I sorry I ever did. This is not my "cause". I am involved in so many other issues I can't even keep them straight. I just don't feel the need to run over here and discuss all of it- especially now. So here's where we stand now. There's going to be a list eventually, currently with large and deadly and who knows what else. It's something MAC wants to do and I'm working with them on it. As I stated in a previous post in the Hurting thread, I think it is extremely low priority as there are so many other things that are more important. I don't know why I have to say things 12 times to each person before they understand what I'm saying, but this is the last time I will state my position on the USL. Anyone who wants to know my opinions on it can sift through the threads- it's all there- in triplicate.

I hope that we continue to discuss issues in this forum. I for one am interested in learning more about the collection and wholesaler sides of the hobby. I hope we can move past the USL and learn more about other topics.

Sorry if I poke a bit to much,I want this discussion forum to be a practice platform on which we will all learn how best to explain the true role this hobby plays in the health of the reef. I truly believe this hobby is the best protector the reefs have in today's industrial market place. This hobby is filled with emotional issues, please search for the truth behind each viewpoint.Sometimes its much harder to find then one would expect!

Any of you ever had a Crown of Thorns? What makes you think it only eats corals? I've had 2 in FO tanks and there's nothing they dont eat, great scavenger.

What place would you consider the Olympics of discussion, If not here, with wholesales ,retailers and hobbists giving input ,If not here,,,, then what platform......the Armstrong Linoleom in a PetCo? Quick! how much coral is imported a year for the trade? Why might Marshal Islands live rock keep Ick out of your Marine tank? What was the reaction of a ban on imposible to keep species at the MAC meeting last Friday?You cant find these answers anywhere but here..... This IS the Olympics Baby and when the comPETition heats up , It will be this forum that saves the Hobby from the emotional opposition! Ps. want to sell me some livestock sources, {Marinefish was sold}

Yeah thanks for the info yet I keep up w/ things more than I'd like and from what i can tell it seems that the overall hobbyist zeal that was going on In ATL is subsiding which isnt that terrible considering the scenes in other metro areas.

Olympics? thats just a signature.

How is M.I. live rock gonna keep ich out of an aquarium? I gotta hear this.

Sources? What are you gonna do w/ sources?

Marshal Island live rock is radio active, The idea that this might irradiate the contants in a fish tank of which it is placed {including ICK} has been contemplated?The added benefit that One would not need to change the rock as often as a UV bulb due to the half life of the rock has also been noted!
