Its 88.00 round trip ,{ so 44.oo first way}.....and none of the net cought fish in my store are less than a ride on a 20 million dollar jet !. But many of the net cought freshwater fish are, and some are from the same countries as the marine fish ? I bet it takes as long to catch fish with a net in a stream as it does to do so in the surf......? With the economy down , it seems this hobby may price itself out of reach of many. There are too many middle men uping the cost.

My goodness but the years go by...
Here we are 4 years later...
this thread contains some of the freshest thinking seen yet on the net regarding reform notions.
MAC should've listened more. It could've saved them from what will happen to them now.

In the years that pass with MAC coming up snake-eyes year after year ....without converting cyanide fisherman in the Philippines or Indonesia...how many corals can be killed in the time?
Let say just 750 divers in each country kills a conservative 25 a day for 240 diving days a year....
How much habitat would that be?
Oh ...let Kalk do the math.
Steve
PS. There never was much of a sense of urgency in them so much as a "go-slow...these things take time" theme.
Any urgency about the no clean fish supply to go with the yearly budget liquidations was generated by us here.

so much for it being a whole 'era'

it was an "era"....another era of a select few making a nice living off of grant money with nothing really to show for their work.

Then again...in the defense of MAC workers;
They were sabatoged from day-one by the rules of engagement put forth from the outset of the program.
The funders have their agenda to be sure and it simply doesn't jive with the rest of the people involved.[ except in theory ]
Poor fisherman have a hard time getting with a program that has everyones reward in mind but theirs.
GMAD, funder mandates and resource management groups etc. all have a stake and a payday in this drama...but since the fisherman have been approached all wrong they have not embraced it as a result.

Ironically, done right, the fisherman are the easiest to get to play ball.
[As is proven by every commercial project to set up collecting stations all over the world all the time]
They are the easiest to show immediate benefit to and the easiest to enlist in training programs that they agree enhance their livlihoods.
But....sandbagging the conversion process and sabatoging field efforts with unattractive or impossible to comply with add-ons, requirements and paperwork have insured that no one will get their agenda satisfied.
No one.
So with all the intellect at work at MAC, CCIF, MAMTI, REEFCHECK etc. etc. you'd figure that at some point they might start looking at their own failed year in and year out strategies and wonder how long will they continue to beat heads against the wall approaching the villages via the wrong mindset.
Enough free and constructive advice.

isn't it the responsibility of those who go work for someone to educate themselves about who and what it is they work for ?

they are all equally to blame, if for nothing else, then for guilt by association

Sometimes you can be so optimistic that you're unwilling to see the truth when it is right in front of you. I know one really nice guy who recently got an education from our favorite ngo that will change him forever. :(

Or Lino?
Or Dave V.?
Or Mitra?
Or Sylvia?
Or Ronet?
Or Randy?
Or Mary?
Or Mike?

Which of the growing list of ex-Mac men are we talking about?

Mitch, OH! You are right. I am not the Peter you were referring to. I also misinterpreted the postings. I should have noted that you stated EDUCATED. Please disregard what I stated previously.
