Nancy,
Why yes, you should go there. Look how much the debate and information flow has increased w/ John Brandts, Mike Kings and Mike Kirdas trips. Why let this thing rest on the character flaws of a few of us prima donnas? You can't take it back. An estrogen driven perspective is needed...You must now go.

Sure makes me want to go, Mike. Wouldn't it be cool to set up an RDO "expedition"?

Nancy

If I thought there was enough interest in it, I would set something up.
In two weeks, you could tour all of the MAC areas either certified or working on it, plus have time for a nice dive boat out to Apo Reefs for a few nights. It could probably be done for $2-2.5K total per person.

I'm telling you, it would be a learning experience for ALL.

Regards.
Mike Kirda

Mike would we get to meet Ferdie and go to that club with Horge?

Meeting Ferdie would be simple, I think.

Getting escorts to the Pegasus? Hmm, might need to add a few extra dollars for you, Mitch... Looking is pretty inexpensive. Playing can get costly. :)

Bill, would you be interested in investigating the MILF and Abu Sayyaf rebel hideouts in Mindanao or Sulu?

John,
I don't know who those groups are, but be very careful in looking for their web site.

I wish sometimes people would actually answer my questions. In all those famous underwater photos of mask wearing cyanide fishermen...

Kalkbreath,

There is a common misconception that the masks the collectors wear are to hide their indentity. They wear headgear that looks like lightweight cotton ski masks with cutouts for the eyes and mouth. These are worn to sheild them from the intense sunlight. The Visayas region of the Philippines is only 10 degrees north of the equator. The clothing can also help to keep them warm in some cases.

It could be a consipiracy, yeah!
Kalk, I bet you didn't see "The X Files: the Movie", did you? Did you know that there could be aliens that look just like that sweet black gold (crude)? So, think about this; what if (just "if" here, bear with me)...what if the corals in those pictures are one kind of alien, and the divers are wearing masks to hide the fact that they're another (8O) kind of alien?!?!? 8O
too-doo! too-doo! too-doo! too-doo! too-doo! too-doo! "You are now entering 'The Twilight Zone', be prepared to be dumbfounded..." 8O
Hey, Seamaiden..........have YOU ever actually seen a coral reef killed by cyanide? How about even a photo? How bout a Bigfoot? How about posting one of these ever so elusive images of cyanide killed reefs? In twenty years I have yet to see one.......big foot or cyanide killed reef...........but people have been talking like both exist even though there is soooo little evidence?

Kalk,

You refuse to believe it even if you do see it.
Tell me again why anyone should take you, the cyanide apologist, seriously?

Gosh,
I never took it seriously, ie. the "challenge" to produce dead coral photos.
I have a number including some hanging on the office wall. Its no big deal. If you go to any area where there has been commercial aquarium divers in the Philippines, its all over the place.
I'll scan some and post them.

Gee................ I think the point is that 99% of the people that are sure hobby damage exists have never actually seen one peice of evidence to support those claims....{only urban rummors}.........The challange was not to you Steve. It was to the other 98%................ Yes, I bet Steve being a buy my fish there net cought kind of guy.......could find a reef.............But the point is that very few people ...even people looking for those damaged reefs cant seem to do so?{last months AA artical}Two corals does not a damaged reef make} . Make sure you explain where and when these photo where taken...........No 1998 natural bleachings or FLa keys photos........and no circa 1982 photos......... damage...........Oh and explainhow that reef could have been killed by our hobby collectors without killing the fish that they were after

Gee...
I thought I went there to visit family and dive with some net-caught fishermen, not to photograph dead coral reefs at your behest.

In that case then, forward me your mailing address so I can send my bill for expenses... Should actually be less than 2K, unless I can also bill you for my translator too?

And since you are offering, when can I expect your payment so I can re-schedule the trip and get those photos for you?
I am anxious to start working, to get you your 'proof', Kalkbreath.

Regards.

Yes, there is, and I'd almost posted about it yesterday because I only (relatively) recently learned what MILF is: Mom I'd Like to F**k.
I learned this because of some friends I have (online--but remember, this maiden has a whole collection) who are college boys, and one night they were calling me this "MILF" thing, and I thought they were talking about some kinda Militant Islamist "L"-something Front..or something like that.

Anyway, I was pretty surprised that they were calling me a militant, I mean, I am involved in my local government, I vote, I have rather strong political views, etc. And then they laid it on me, and OH MY GOD! Pretty shocking, especially coming from guys young enough to be my kids. 8O

Does that help? :D (Oh yeah, I think the term came from the movie "American Pie".)

Oh yeah, sorry Kalk, but you remind of those idjuts who say that the Holocaust never happened cuz they never saw it, and that the U.S. moon landing never happened, it was all faked. You fail to make use of that which makes humans unique--the ability (through spoken or written word) to convey information, thus adding to the base of knowledge that can be shared among us all. This is why I will never take you seriously.

Yes, its true,
Hobbyists, when going to the Philippines tend to look for pretty stuff to see and photograph. It takes a real character to go looking for ugly, dead coral. Generally the point is to avoid that stuff and go futher until you find the living corals on the leading edges of the debilitated concentric circles of reefs closer to home.
Be careful what you ask for. There is nothing in the Philippines commoner and more easily found then deal coral.
Steve
PS. Photo tip. When sneaking up on the elusive cyanide killed Philippine coral, look to areas with no river run off as your dead corals may also have been caused by siltation. The best and futher afield reefs give you clear water, no pollution or siltation and plenty of dead yet unbroken coral heads [ broken possible dynamite] .
Any where on Luzon is a good place to look.

With regard to the use of the acronym MILF, in the context of the Philippines it stands for Moro International Liberation Front. There is also a Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF or just MLF), the New Peoples Army (NPA), and the Abbu Sayiff (the last ones have been linked to Al Queda).
