With all the support to have Ferdinand Cruz speak at the MACNA conference, how about a fund to have Kalkbreath flown to the Philippines so see the damage of the reefs first hand?

Hmm that may be an idea, The collectors could tie an anchor around his waist and toss him so he can see the destruction first hand. But that would be a waste of a good anchor.
Cement shoes would also work to help him get down to where he can see whats going on and cement is inexpensive.

Just joking Kalkbreath... :D :D ..

as much as i disagree w kalk, and as far out of left field as i percieve most of his posts to be, doesn't this thread fall into the 'personal attack' category?

I believe kylen's post was a light hearted attempted at a joke. If Kalkbreath takes issues with this, please let me know and I will attempt to find a suitable resolution for the parties involved.

Perhaps you were joking too, vitz ;) Welcome back to the boards.

NO sweat..........But I wish sometimes people would actually answer my questions? Like : In all those famous underwater photos of mask wearing cyanide fishermen.............Why is it that none of the corals in the photos around these divers.......are dead? ...............

Just out of curiosity, how much would such a trip cost? John...Mike K.???

Nancy

Cost from Chicago to Manila can be as low as $700, but a more typical cost would be something like $850-1000, depending on time of year.

Once in the Philippines, transportation can be quite cheap if you don't mind taking the buses between cities.

Now everybody please behave and be on your best behavior. The Philippine President is over here in the USA on a diplomatic visit. She is getting the red carpet treatment in Washington right now. If she happened to visit reefs.org we would certainly want to appear civilized.

We can actually get kalkbreath (and even Bill) over to the Republic of the Philippines on a much cheaper ticket. If they can be fit into a cardboard balikbayan box the fare would only be about $50US.

Bill, would you be interested in investigating the MILF and Abu Sayyaf rebel hideouts in Mindanao or Sulu?

The beer of choice in the Philippines is of course San Miguel, and it is quite good. The native tuba (coconut flower wine) is not to be missed either. It only comes in unmarked gallon milk jugs

Now that I have surfaced, only one question remains: Where is Nemo??

It could be a consipiracy, yeah!
Kalk, I bet you didn't see "The X Files: the Movie", did you? Did you know that there could be aliens that look just like that sweet black gold (crude)? So, think about this; what if (just "if" here, bear with me)...what if the corals in those pictures are one kind of alien, and the divers are wearing masks to hide the fact that they're another (8O) kind of alien?!?!? 8O

Not nearly as expensive as I thought. Thanks, Mike!

Nancy,

No, it is not really that expensive.
Even inter-island travel is not that expensive: The flight to Coron, for example, was only ~$100 per person round trip. Not bad for a 1 hour puddle jumper flight. The ferry is cheaper, but it takes about 20 hours, plus it can be rough if the seas are bad.

Point is, if you are using US Dollars, the Philippines is a really cheap place to travel. Three star hotels in Makati for $25 per night. Most B&B type places are $7-10 per night in the provinces. Food is typically ~$3 per meal. Diving is typically $15 per dive, maybe $25 at the more expensive locations.
These are lower-end accomodations to be sure, but that is part of the whole fun of it!

Regards.

Sure makes me want to go, Mike. Wouldn't it be cool to set up an RDO "expedition"?

Nancy

If I thought there was enough interest in it, I would set something up.
In two weeks, you could tour all of the MAC areas either certified or working on it, plus have time for a nice dive boat out to Apo Reefs for a few nights. It could probably be done for $2-2.5K total per person.

I'm telling you, it would be a learning experience for ALL.

Regards.
