Marine Aquarium Council has created magnetic refrigerator cards with suggestions on preparing for a responsible entry into the hobby of marine aquarium keeping. These cards were given out at the Hollywood premiere of 'Finding Nemo'.

Man, they sure do have a lot of time and money for marketing and PR. How about getting a fish supply on line?? I hate to sound like a broken record, but this continued cart before the horse mentality is tiring.

Mary, why don't you just ignore it? You wouldn't sound like a broken record if you didn't say anything at all.

Looks really nice  . Where are the nice stickers for my tanks? I've been waiting patiently for my information pack regarding my usage of MAC logos. I called MAC's HQ twice last week for an update but no reply.

I went to see Finding Nemo tonight and it makes a pretty strong anti-aquarium statement. MAC really is taking up for responsible aquarium keeping and maybe people are being a bit too harsh on this issue. John what size is the sticker? I see good old Charles must have taken the photo. IMO the movie will not make kids want to keep little Nemos and Dorys.

My first thoughts were concern that a bunch of Nemo Moms would go out to any LFS a buy a bunch of Nemos and tangs(perish the thought) for their little ones.
The sticker acts as a caution against this and is well written. MAC got the message right.
Who did the blurb?

I have to admit the use of Nemo, the child actor etc. by MAC was brilliant.

Steve, Mike et al, you need to stay awake all night and figure out how you can leverage this Nemo thing to get a bunch of training money

Well heck that card renders my whole rack of books obsolete

Seriously, I think it's a good thing that MAC is trying to put a positive spin on things (is spin the operative word? :D ) - personally I think it's a pity that there isn't so much substance behind the PR campaign, as far as MAC is concerned - they cannot deliver. However if the MAC publicity gives people pause for thought before they rush out for their own Nemo, I'm all for that.

Credit where it's due - certified fish notwithstanding, this is one thing that MAC is good at - public relations with hobbyists. They have the money and the means that the rest of us don't.

I've had a flurry of kids looking at Nemo in my shop all weekend - but no impulse shoppers. Luckily my location isn't terribly conducive to impulse type shoppers - and I like it that way. Somebody seeks me out it's because they have looked and researched. I AM prepared with some extra "beginner" type books on hand just in case.... that's usually all an impulse shopper gets to leave with on the first visit.

And boy oh boy, wouldn't MAC just love that? With no one to question them they could have that cart dragging the horse all over this industry.

MAC asked me to help them come up with a short list of beginners points. I think they turned out well.

Great job John. Short and it makes the point.
Who came up with the whole idea of the MAC/Nemo promo?

Hey, and they do have MAC certified green chromis to boot. Finally, a pc picture in advertising  Good job. Oh, and I really like the use of the sun gleaming thru the logo, makes it look "heavenly".

John and MAC team,

Congratulations for a job well done. It was a brilliant idea.

Jaime

Well thank you Jaime. MAC is often very creative and resourceful for its public relations. This particular outreach turned a potential negative atmosphere into one with a clear sense of a positive mission. The magnet concept needed a few readable short bullet points that would have broad appeal. I felt the need to not be overly specific or controversial with the tips. The goal was to make something that nearly any hobbyist or dealer would respect, and still be meaningful. It also needed to be relevant into the future. The beautiful reef photo by Charles adds a nice colorful appeal.

So with just a reasonable expenditure of layout and printing, the handouts including the magnet have the desired effect.

Bill,
Cart horse, horse Cart?
Steve

It's called brand awareness, Steve. It's common and effective public relations to speak of coming supplies and services even before they are fully available. The references all lead to the MAC website which clearly points out the few MAC Certified Retailers. It doesn't hurt MAC's effort if people are asking for it by name.

Also remember, MAC had no control over when this film was released.

You should be happy Steve :!: All this ruckus about aquarium industry reform just makes people more aware and more likely to voluntarily choose net-caught. You don't have to spend a dime to reap the public awareness that MAC's PR sows. Or are you just fidgety when you don't have the microphone in your hand?

Now go get Abba.

John I didn't see anyone handing out the MAC magnets at the theater last night. I guess we're on our own here in Bowling Green.
