This is a major development because the outrage against Tetra`s incompetant presentation of the requirements of keeping marine fish will now be know to all animal keepers as well.
Dog, cat and other pet owners worldwide can now walk into their pet stores and also demand that Tetra products be removed from their shelves.
Oh what a beautiful morning

Thanks for the link, Nancy

Ummm just wondering but what products do you guys plan on boycotting? Tetra doesn't really make any saltwater products that are worth your money anyway. I don't carry any tetra products (except cartridges for their whisper filters) so it doesn't really bother me. But i would imagine that Tetra could withstand a boycott from a pretty small minority of customers who don't buy their products in the first place. As for boycotting stores simply for selling the product, that's just silly and rash.

ANother good question would be why did they choose Tetra? Or why was their no other prominent Salt Water manufacturer for them to go to?

I carry their freeze-dried krill and their brine nets (theirs is the only brine net that I've found that doesn't let the eggs go through...

That's the only stuff of theirs that I carry - not even enough to be worthy of mention... but since you brought it up, I mentioned it *g* :D

Tetra should be called out on this, not 'educated' nor anything else easy or positive. IMHO, there's no way to put a positive spin on this.

Tetra should have known what they were doing was wrong before they did their segment on the air. It's total BS.

I, for one, believe they did know. How could they not, given all their years in this business?

Something stinks here, and I know it's not me. I showered today.

Peace,

Chip

I have not seen any inside information about the production of the show. The are questions about whose idea it was. Why was Tetra on the show? Who at Tetra decided to use that particular set-up as a demo? What retailer (or wholesaler) was used to supply the livestock? Who decided on those particular fish? Was a 'larger' tang used so that it would show well on TV?

Did I see a very large aquarium set up in the far background of the studio set? Did some aquarium service company also work in the production of this?

There has never been any suggestion in a boycott of LFS that carry Tetra products.
The reefing community knows that the best way to affect Tetra is to stop buying their products.
Most important is to have LFS like you contact your reps or suppliers and thereby let Tetra know that industry is also upset about what they have done and ask them to make amends.
Please do this first thing Monday morning.

Hi Chip,

The show is over. It's past. It's water under the bridge. Any damage has been done. Now the thing to do is go about fixing it in a rational, productive, positive and humanitarian way. More jerks on RC actually posted the home address and phone number of the Tetra Representative that did the demo. I don't want to be a part of a movement that plays those games. What if her house is firebombed by some insane reef geek, in the name of helping our beloved hobby? Something tells me that if there really are insane reef geeks, they are over there in that forum and in that thread.

It is possible that Tetra left the decisions of the demo entirely to their representative.

now i know you've never ever ever ever worked a day in the retail pet industry

better than 80% of all animal owners do so incompetently-and the figure is higher for 'aquarists'

the percentage of animal owners i've met since starting in retail around '77, that actually bothered to properly educate themselves about the creatures they 'keep' is infinitesimally tiny

just the use of the word 'own' when people refer to their pets should speak volumes to you

Sorry John but it is not over it has just begun.
It will be over when Tetra apologises to the reefing community and makes amends.
An excellent idea posted by several reefers was to suggest to Tetra that some of the profit they made from their crass demonstration could be donated to buy nets for Philippine and Indonesian fishers.
Any reasonable industry faced with the situation would quickly jump at a suggestion like this. Tetra did not and thought it would blow over and it won`t.
Let it be a lesson to all industry.

Wayne,

The problem that the program created was that it suggested that you can put 2 clownfish, a blue tang, a starfish and a seahorse into a 5 gallon tank. The way to solve that problem is to educate (or re-educate) the aquarium industry not to carry out the suggestions of the show. Wayne, kids can demand Nemo and Dory in a 5 gallon tank, but retailers DO NOT have to sell it to them.

Having Tetra donate money for netting doesn't solve that problem. Any kid could put a net-caught blue tang into a 5 gallon tank IF A RETAILER WILL SELL IT TO HIM. Then you can boycott Tetra all over again...for buying the nets that caught Dory that went into a 5 gallon tank sold by a retailer and died

Than the answer is to have Tetra donate money for education, through MAC or whatever and for industry itself to contact Tetra and assist them with their nightmare.
From day one these options were presented to Tetra and they chose to do nothing.
It will only get worse for them.

Wayne,

It's only been a week since the episode. Chill out and wait to see what Tetra does. In the meantime hurry up and run out to all of the LFS and warn them that unsuspecting people might be coming in for 5 gallon Nemo tanks! Do it Wayne. If you don't walk out the door now and warn your LFS you are adding to the number of Nemo deaths. Wayne, do something :!: :!:

I may as well go on the record now by stating that Marine Aquarium Council (MAC) is not in support of any boycotts concerning the Nemo/CBS/Tetra issue. Comments on a Reef Central thread imply that MAC is supportive of the hobbyist movement to boycott Tetra Products. This is a blatent misrepresentation of MAC's position.

MAC is exploring constructive dialogue with Tetra, and is hoping for a positive outcome to better educate the industry and hobby.

Ummm, I did that a long time ago when I decided not to carry their products at all. I choose to do business with the people who do things right. That's the best I can do. What I was implying in my other post was that because of all the boycott's and complaints and perfectionism that floats around on these boards between hobbyist, retail and manufacturers, there are no salt water manufacturer's that are willing to step up and put the right face on the hobby. Giving out personal addresses and smear campaigns and boycott's certianly aren't the way to go about changing that either.

Yes it has been one week and Tetra has done nothing

I respect your personal view on this but do not agree with doing nothing.
What is the postition on MASNA in light of the fact that there have been over 32,000 hits on the RC thread on this subject by interested reefers and undoubtedly hundreds of protests by them to Tetra?

I am also interested in the position of your Chicago club. As you are aware many clubs throughout the US are also doing something from contacting Tetra as a group to even organizing a boycott in their areas.

I am going to continue to do something until I hear from Tetra that they have done something.

Has everyone seen the Tetra clip?

Wayne,

Tetra has admitted their error. That is a damn good start. More will follow.

Wayne, do you have a problem with numbers? First you tell me that the tang was 6", now you tell me that that RC thread is over 32,000 hits. At this moment it has 30,728 hits. Do I have to start watching what you say like a hawk? 8O

MASNA has posted a link to the RC thread. So far that's all.

CMAS-Chicago has done nothing. Yesterday, four of our members (myself included) did discuss how terrible it was that Tetra put on this demonstration, we went on to discuss how rotten the boycott/smear campaign is. It's easy to talk about effective, positive ways to remedy the situation, without mentioning any boycotts.

welp the boycott is silly - not that I'm against it, just that I doubt anyone who's crowing about it actually uses Tetra products. We have one Tetra product in our inventory, Brine Shrimp nets - my dropping that product line is hardly going to affect Tetra's bottom line LOL.

Nobody seems to be worried about All-Glass, they provided the tanks for the demo, I wonder how many people would drop AGA? and uhh that means Oceanic too heh, and the clowns supposedly came from ORA. Are these ppl willing to boycott those companies as well?

Only if you want to, but keep checking as it is up another 200 since you posted a few minutes ago.
I am happy to see that MASNA has posted the thread and that the four of you in Chicago share the worldwide view that Tetra did the hobby, the industry and obvious the thousands of fish that will die in Nemo moms 5 gallon tanks a very serious wrong.
Now my question. What are you going to do about it?
Have you guys emailed Tetra and let them know how terrible they are to put on that crass demonstration yet?
Oh my God my son just tested the PH with a Tetra test kit 8O
Well I am off to the lfs to buy another test kit (anyones but Tetra) and ask that they express their concern to their Tetra rep or supplier and remove Tetra product from their shelves.
We will overcome!!!
