Marine Aquarium Council (MAC) and the New York Aquarium Host Day of Learning for Salt-Water Aquarium Hobbyists

Brooklyn, NY - Guests will learn the secrets of maintaining a beautiful aquarium that is friendly to both fish and the environment during the Marine Aquarium Hobbyist Day at the New York Aquarium. The event will feature a variety of guest lectures in the Aquarium's Education Hall and Explore the Shore Classroom. Lectures will focus on a myriad of marine aquarium topics, such as aquarium planning, making wise decisions on animal and supplies selection, set-up and aquarium maintenance. The Aquarium's Seaside Pavilion will also be teeming with exhibits and booths featuring local marine aquarium suppliers and other related organizations.

The Marine Aquarium Hobbyist Day is a joint project of the New York Aquarium and the Marine Aquarium Council (MAC), an international non-profit association based in Honolulu, Hawaii. MAC's mission is to conserve reefs and other marine ecosystems through their unique MAC Certification standards for those engaged in the collection and care of marine animals, including saltwater fish, corals and invertebrates. The Marine Aquarium Hobbyist Day is designed to provide education on MAC Certified marine aquarium animals and promote maintaining a responsible marine aquarium.

Guest speakers for the one-day lecture series include Mike Paletta, Joe Yaiulla, Patrick Donston, John Brandt, Paul Sieswerda, Rick Preuss and Mark Shreffler.

It will be a brief overview of the aquarium fish industry in the Philippines. Much of it will relate to my trip there in February. I've got nice pictures and they work well with a descriptive narration.

It poured rain Saturday morning and it may have kept some people home but there was still a crowd when the lectures began. The talks were all well received and had many follow-up questions. The man in the blue checkered shirt is Hugo Freudenthal, who named zooxanthellae in 1962 - Symbiodinium microadriaticum (Freudenthal).
