i would suggest that any 'mass shipment' 's 3-4 day post arrival period in the chain of custody be taken into account

a retail sale, which is more limited to 1-4 items at a time on avg, then introduces too many individual husbandry systems as variables that affect health, to really be able to consider the initial shipment health as a more prime suspect than the system environment for mortality, imo

i think the %age of the original export amount at 'stage2' in the chain (import/wholesaler to retailer) is a large enough slice of the initial shipment going in to one particular system, to be able to rule out a system caused mortality event more easily

e.g.-if i know my system is healthy through proper maintenance and monitoring (logging of parameters),and out of a shipment i only lose 'classic cyanide target species', like damsels, etc out of one particular shipment, a presumption of cyanide poisoning would be more likely to be correct at that stage in the game (though it's a presumption  ), due to my ability to rule out system stressors

it doesn't rule out shipping/damage stressors from other factors-holding, etc.

hope that makes sense

How then would you explain the exceptions to the rule? You get your fish from the same source, same fish variety and same shipping conditions ..........how would you explain your 10% DOA DAA when the other guy down the street loses 35% ? How the fish are treated after leaving the shipping bag, plays a greater role in DAA then the health of the fish upon arrival. If the fish made it that far .it was a healthy fish to begin with. I again return to F&S ten day gaurantee? Hobbyists that order online generally take better care of their fish then average walk ins of a retail store. And many times much better care to new fish then an over crowded LFS cube or wholesale vatts. The fishes health is the same in all five examples..........only the conditions the new fish is dumped into vary ...........If the health of the incoming fish was the real cause to DAA then there would be a similar DAA for all conditions the fish splash into..........

And to put it in perspective ........Yellow tangs should have zero DOA or DAA......But more importantly yellow tangs would have simular DOA DAA results reguardless of where the fish ended up ......"Big BOX store"? ...........IF THE HEALTH OF THE INCOMMING FISH WAS THE KEY TO SURVIVAL DURING THE FIRST FIVE DAYS.

all exceptions prove the rule

my exp w/yellow tangs is also practically 0% mortality-but that's irrelevant, since the yt's come from hawaii, not the phillipines
