Maritime cops nab 5 Morong blast-fishers

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT—Five fishermen were collared by operatives of the 3rd Regional Maritime Police Office (3RMO) while blast-fishing on the shoreline of Sitio Sabang, Barangay Mabayo in Morong, Bataan, Friday morning.
Supt. Marco Abian, 3RMO regional commander, identified the suspects as Christopher Manacmol, 28; Delano Samonte, 42; Jesus Olan-Olan, 57; Ricardo Mekardos, 26; and Paquito Repil, 36, all residents of Sitio Sabang.
Police reports disclosed that at about 10 a.m. Police Officer 1 Richard Rodriguez and Police Officer 1 Mariel Cuizon were patrolling the area when they heard of a loud explosion prompting them to proceed to the area and investigate.
The suspects were onboard two unmarked motorized bancas using improvised explosive devices in their fishing.
The authorities seized about 50 kilos of assorted small fish (dilis), an improvised paddle, two pieces of hose and compressor, and the two unmarked motorized bancas used by the fishermen in blast fishing.
The suspects were temporary held at the 3RMO detention center and charges of violating Section 88 of the Republic Act 8850, or the Fisheries Code of 1998, were being readied against them.
