Maritime cops nab 5 Morong blast-fishers

By Malou Dungog
Manila Times - Central Luzon Bureau
September 6, 2004

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT—Five fishermen were collared by operatives of the 3rd Regional Maritime Police Office (3RMO) while blast-fishing on the shoreline of Sitio Sabang, Barangay Mabayo in Morong, Bataan, Friday morning.

Supt. Marco Abian, 3RMO regional commander, identified the suspects as Christopher Manacmol, 28; Delano Samonte, 42; Jesus Olan-Olan, 57; Ricardo Mekardos, 26; and Paquito Repil, 36, all residents of Sitio Sabang.

Police reports disclosed that at about 10 a.m. Police Officer 1 Richard Rodriguez and Police Officer 1 Mariel Cuizon were patrolling the area when they heard of a loud explosion prompting them to proceed to the area and investigate.

The suspects were onboard two unmarked motorized bancas using improvised explosive devices in their fishing.

The authorities seized about 50 kilos of assorted small fish (dilis), an improvised paddle, two pieces of hose and compressor, and the two unmarked motorized bancas used by the fishermen in blast fishing.

The suspects were temporary held at the 3RMO detention center and charges of violating Section 88 of the Republic Act 8850, or the Fisheries Code of 1998, were being readied against them.

John as we do our part to deal with sustainable issue, the CDT, and training and other programmes, it is nice to see post like this one that shows the criminals are getting caught.
If we charged one or two of them here under the Lacey Act, it would be bring everyone else in line.

I thought the Lacey Act was a United States law. How are you going to use it to charge the importers in Vancouver? Why do you continue to get our two countries confused? You need to work with the Canadian legislature.

More proof of naesco's IGNORANCE and why he should STFU.

I am in Canada, AS WELL.
We in Canada do not have a "Lacey Act" which would punish those who know or ought to have known that the fish they are importing are cyanide caught.
What do you think the effect of one or two prosecutions in the US for offenders would have on the buying behaviour of the others.?

Would we than need BILL 4928 to deal with cyanide?

Were these food fishers or MO fishers? This will make this Lacey Act debate a moot point in this situation.

Its a moot point already because the offenders are not being charged in the US and therefore it does not apply. - It would be nice however, if someone could get the STFU to stick..

Dilis are a rather small, slender foodfish, and I am quite familiar with the area: my father presently lives in Morong, though we hail originally from nearby Hermosa. There are few 'coral reefs' to speak of --it is mostly sand/siltbottom in that area --until you get further out from shoreline, about a kilometer or more.

he violators are decribed as having been blastfishing by the shoreline, neh?

There are a few nearshore reefs, around the defunct Bataan Nuclear Power Plant, but those waters are heavily-restricted (by Navy SWAG) and are certainly NOT where the blast fishing took place, or else we never would have heard of it.

As for even bringing up the Lacey Act...

Dilis are often dried in the sun, and then later fried.
Fresh, the larger ones are fried after dipping in salty batter,
or the small ones are lumped with batter into burger-patty-like 'okoy'.
More than one way to cook dilis.

Re;
Article on local BLAST fishing in the philippines.

Lacey act and the CDT? 100% irrelevant.

Gago...
Please read this stuff before engaging the automated knee-jerk responses.
This little thread does give a window into the world of some posters.
A little bit of info goes in and like some light into a greenhouse...it reflects, refracts and multiplies itself....

Steve
PS. Jorge must get a real kick out of this stuff.
