Your telling me, that even when this list was updated on your site (nov 22, 2004_, that MAC fish weren't flowing due to interception? How can that be? It's been many months since then. I know there hasn't been any MAC fish this year at at least one of the US certified wholesalers.

No need to answer, we'll just have an akward moment at MACNA next month ;)

John,

They really ought to update this address...

Mike

And Tawi-Tawi? How the heck are they going to get fish out of Tawi-Tawi economically??? Jeez, that is about as far away from anywhere as you can possibly be in the Philippines...

Imagine if you will how even those few "certified" fish collectors in Buhol stopped shipping thru the 'chain of custody' for a moment.

The MAC certified facilities in Manila refused to buy them.

MAC dealers refused to buy them and they found another market...thats how. What does this fact mean to the entire premise of the project?
At least you would think that the pres of the exporters assoc and MAC officer would buy them...!
I mean to hear all the theory about value enhancements, perfect quality, saving the reefs etc. they would have been snapped up by the MAC list of certified dealers, right?
Afterall, its only a few boxes a week!

Nothing illustrates better the difference between the
1. letter of commitment...which everyone signed...the

2. certified facility....which is easy and means nothing, and the
3. certified fish supply which apparently is nearly impossible [ for MAC to produce anyway ] and means so very much.
The fish didn't get intercepted.
The MAC people didn't want them...as they were not cost effective and didn't walk on water.

I'm here to clarify some things as MOST of what is being stated here about MAC operations in the Philipinnes and Indonesia is pure propaganda.....

If you all really cared about reeform, why don't you lend some constructive criticism instead of making what are mostly inaccurate/false statements.

I have been working here in the Philipinnes and Indo for 5 months now; and although it certainly doesn't make me an expert, I am seeing positive results from MAC's work that aren't readily apparent to all right now.

But Mark,
You told me at MACNA '04 that if fish supply did not flow by October of 2004 when dealers were up for re-certification, that you would resign.

Mark, the fish for the waiting dealers did not flow.

Keep in mind, you evaluate things based on a criteria totally different then commercial, working fish producers. 6 months can actually create a huge change in number of divers trained, fish produced and dealers satisfied.
How on earth do you guys go thru year after year with such small results while working on them full time!?
MAC certified importers have purchased a huge amount of poisoned, coral killing product while waiting for you guys!

Slow, slow, Nothing Going On that counts....or makes a difference while they hold up their certified facility cards to show an unsuspecting public.

Its 2005 now, mid-summer.
You could have trained a thousand, surveyed 20 collection areas and earned a credibility beyond still another batch of prospects and promises....IF guys you had any experience at this stuff.

But I do understand the frustration and the impossible position you are in.

Its the ultra-bureaucratic MAC rules of paperflow in place and they are hated by all concerned...especially the divers and smaller outfits that don't have a spare bookeeper to try and follow the COC.

Given this huge handicap, you guys have to let reefs die as you fiddle, false star and squander time and time again.
Its not possible to do this Mark. Not the way its designed.

Reef conservation and fishermans conversions are held as a secondary priorities and hostage to the bookkeeping rules that ruin your chances to begin with! But, they won't and say they cannot change the rules now...so the failures must continue behind schedule.
Steve

PS... FINAL CONSTRUCTIVE ADVICE;
The only reason anyone signed the letter of commitment is as Elwyn Segrest said years ago..."Why not, we never thought it would amount to anything anyway!"
And boy did he nail it.

Hello
Oh where to start... As a life long aquarist (28 years Marine) I have had the privilege of patronizing Mike S. at his shop The Living Sea. As I am not privey to his conversations with Steve R. or John B. I can only tell you what I have heard or seen in my many stops there over the last few years. As I own 16 marine aquariums and drive past his shop twice a day, going to and from work I have stopped in on many occasion. Anyway back in Oct. 2001 I drop by one evening to do a little fishing and and I find Mike readying a bank of 40's for some known clean fish from the Philipines. I ask him "tell me all about in man", Oh it sounded all so good. I placed an order for a CBB and went home to prepare a quarantine tank for my new arrival, to no avail as it was not to be.
Back in the day their were Mac stickers on the aquariums, those little blue hand bills explaining it all, and don't for get the certificate. I'll admit there were some MAC fish in the beginning (01 & 02) but nothing I'd get excited about, nor did he. As time passed the stickers came down, the hand bills were stacked next to the Marc Weiss literature, and for the certificate it is still hanging on the wall!
Stop the press, news flash.
I stopped in on my way home today to get Mike's take on all this to no avail as he won't be back from vacation til next Wed. I did talk with Nicole a little about the rumored MAC fish, "none here, havn't been any in over a year and it dosn't look good for tomorrow either". I thank her for her time, grab some brine shrimp and a magazine and head for the door. "Hey Doug you still interested in that CBB right". I told her "good night and I'll sea ya Later".

oh i'm so flattered to be remembered... it's funny but sad that people focus ONLY on the negative and can't acknowledge anything positive that MAC has done.... As was stated before, it's too bad this forum can't be more useful with all of the experience here......

Hi,Mark
Would you please point out some possitive aspects.I have made the mistake of "thinking" MAC might be ok.Man, Mac is worse than the F word here.*IMO*

Hi CF, do you mean the "F" word as in farmin? which actually takes away from the livelyhood of poor tropical coastal dwellers?

Some positive progress: collectors are being trained in: resource management, better collection techniques, and BETTER post harvest handling.... As was stated here, maybe on another thread; MAC fish have more often been sent to Europe where industry and hobbyists are willing to pay more for quality fish....

Mark

ok, i'll bite.....

so how much of a price increase is/was there for 'mac certified' fish in europe, and where does the price increase go to ?

oh, and how many of what certified fish (species, and box counts) are going to europe, and in which retail outlets are they being sold?

Sounds good to me :D
Ya, I understand the farmin inland, not being good to you guys and the islanders, but why should the hobbyists supply be solely dependant on politics, where a bunch of experts way more savy control the product, and then there be a constant threat of you guys pretty much ending it as well, if they did just that.
Its pretty simple for one to learn the hobby and start farmin on a hobby level then trade to build diversity.

solely *imo*

Hello Mark
Am I to belive us (we) coral frggers are putting the filipino coral (fishers) out of business. Any how please hang around and welcome to our nightmare!
Can you confirm that any MAC fish have landed in the U.S. and what would be available to us fishnuts?

Something to think about from my uneducated mind, Mark@Mac

If the hobbyists knew you were aginst "coralfarmin", they *NEVER* would buy another *MAC FISH* *IMO*
I'm *assuming* you will now reiterate your responce in a hobbyists "coralfarmin friendly manner", or MAC is *REALLY DOOMED* *IMO*
Even I am smart enough to see that.

So Mark,
The reason for no fish to the Americans now is that the Euros pay more for the trickle of fish????

Have you informed poor Living Sea about this? They are still loyal and waiting...apparently....[ ie 'Waiting for Godot'....its a play }
