Hi
I am wanting to know if I should really pay re-ox fees for my transshipments of coral.
It cost $18 per box on my last order, I have heard that it is not needed for corals.
I can't figure how they even re-oxed when the bags were sealed with metal bands.

I had a great order though, send by a mac cert. importer/exporter.

I cheated and found the name of the mac cert. importer/exporter with their CA and Islands office # on the box.

My transshipper used them as the supplier.

I dont want to go over my transship contacts head and call the actual supplier and ask, though I'd love to, I want to play by the rules :)

If your not a legitimate storefront then I think a case could be made that your already breaking the rules. At least that would be the view of people like me who risked everything they had to open a store the right way. I still maintain that the wholesalers who sell to the garage guys are stabbing the true brick and mortar retailers in the back.

The re-ox fee, is for rebagging + re-ox ;) If your transhipping it, I'd pay. you can try not doing it, and see what % of DOA/DAA you'll get. IMO it'll be more expensive not to have re-ox'd.

Don't worry about going straight to Walt :D

gresham, this is not walt

dizzy, I dont have a garage.I think that a greenhouse 20x30 is a good "start" at a aquaculter farm

most sponsors on the BB's are not brick and mortar are they ??

dizzy,
I'd like to see you do in a store, what can be done in a greenhouse that size

I have a small 16x20 greenhouse already with 1200 gallons, man the humidity in a store would be bad without greenhouse fans, and about 3000 gallons

and the lights needed on top of that...give me a break

Look coralfarmin I have seen the pictures you posted of the lean too on the back of your house. My garage is actually 18' x 23'. It is just an average two car garage. How is a 16' x 20' lean too greenhouse very much different than someone who puts metal halide in their average size garage?

Ok, Dizzy ...you have the right to think that a 20x30 freestanding commercial greenhouse is not enough to start

With the 16x20 also, that would be alot of water to me...between 3-4000 gallons, stablizing more and more every day just for coral

Oh, I thought you hadn't done the 20 x 30 yet. Just talking about something ain't the same as actually doing it. Should the wholesalers just sell to all the hobbyists direct because they might open a store someday?

Coralfarmin,

Maybe the question should be, Are you buying to grow, for stock or to resell right away? Are you going to be retail or wholesale? Either way you need insurance and all the licenses as needed. That way I don't think anybody here that is retail will be upset. And maybe you have already done all this.

I am now setup for retail sales.

Currently, I just started to buy and sell wild stock.

I have about 1200 gallons in my first 16x20 greenhouse,I can hold well over 200
full size corals fairly easy.

I am starting the second greenhouse within the week, it will be setup for propin

I have already invested almost $1000 in shipping supplies, so dont plan to quit anytime soon

Hmm

I was just trying to clarify that I was a seller and not just a hobbyist, since that is what I thought the question was

Not boasting, or trying to impress YOU

This "retail" outlet is on your residential property?

Is your home zoned commercial? If yes, would that be industrial or retail? I know I couldn't be running a chop shop out of my backyard, old Stella behind me would have a cow and call the city on me.

If it isn't, and if I was one of your neighbours, I'd start getting pissed when that steady stream of customers starts heading through your subdivision. With the greenhouse, the lights and the traffic, you might expect a visit from your local Narcs too

It will take a HELL of a lot more than 13 coral sales a week to pay your overhead - even as small as it may be. 13 corals, let's be generous and say he got $50 apiece for them, that's $650 for a week. How much did it cost to make that? A typical 2000 or so square foot retail store needs that in sales PER DAY just to break even. Of course garage businesses --- oops "GREENHOUSE" businesses have less overhead than a real retail store, but he's still going to have an electric and water bill to pay, plus all that transshipping, reox, air freight, bags, boxes, salt, .... it all adds up.

OH and that MAC certification will set him back some too....

Mitch, I'm with you! :)

It depends on where he lives. If he is out in the county then he is a technically a farm and can sell his produce. NC has a whole different set of rules for "farming".

So if your shipping out you must have an etail website. Go ahead and tell us what it is, and use this opportunity to promote yourself without someone accusing you of pimping your business.
