I have two people starting to work on the new CORL-AS website that will provide info and pictures of the village projects along with CORL’s programs. The hobbyist will be able to order corals directly until we can fully supply our distributors who will be our main source of products.

BTW The cost of buying from our distributors will be much less than direct due to the shipping discounts associated with larger volumes.

As of date the CORL-AS branch has not shipped out any corals to anyone. A few people who have visited did take some items off Island with them when they left (with permits).

If any hobbyist would like to purchase corals produced through our projects they can e-mail me for a list of what we have available and we can calculate shipping cost.

Any LFS wishing to carry our products can contact me and we can work together with our distributors to get you some.

The CORL-AS web site is being designed to provide info on each coral species under propagation including site info on the mother/donor coral stock.

I have a few shipments also promised to Marine Aquarium Clubs for their livestock auctions. If your club is interested in doing a few boxes to be auctioned off for CORL and Club donations at a % split, please have your Club President send me an e-mail.

So if you would like some corals propagated by communities that are taking an active role in saving their coral reef resources, or you just wish to donate to help make it happen, send me a e-mail to [email protected].

Nomenclature..new word for me :) this is what we need nomenclature codes for both mariculter and closed system frags.I will email you and hope others do the same.Since you could be a huge resource on the mariculter coding help.

Jenn,Dizzy,Kalk..What do you think we could all agree on for Captive raised(closed system frags) ,just one standard code to represent that a frag left the ocean and is branded whatever year generation to be raised in a closed system regardless of lighting and other husbandry methods.

CC=Captive Clone
CF=Captive Frag
other
Also anyone else who reads this even if you are just a hobbyist I want to know what you think.
We need some type of code to brand and log frags history in closed systems that will be standard and used even by the advanced hobbyist's

Nomenclature

Heh.
I worked on this very issue with another hobbyist several years ago.
What you are going to find is that there is no standard definition, and you will never get frag producers to agree on a standard one either.
The best producer can do is create a system that seems reasonable to them, post it to the web and point to it.

Unless some organization steps in to create a standard definition, (like MAC or someone similar) you will continue to have coral chop shops market frags off a newly imported coral head as 'captive raised'. There are producers that will swear that they are not coral chop shops, but practice the above exactly as described.

And out of the hobbyists as a whole, about 1 or 2% actually care. And this is probably an over-estimate.

Regards.

What would U use to code frags for data logging, raised in closed systems regardless of husbandry lighting etc..the goal to be able to lable a closed system frags time in captivity by generation's of one year.

I would probably choose CC= Captive Clone = closed system raised.
I have time to plan this out though since my greenhouse start up strategy is to start up in spring so the weather is nice enough to not require heating of the greenhouse structure, when it will only be actualy establishing its self.

Can you point me to the discussion you had several years ago on nomenclature coding of coral farming industry terms?

It was off-list via private e-mail exchanges mostly.

The sticking point will always be the definitions.
People will define 'captive raised' very differently, as I alluded to before.

As far as your internal coding system, pick an letter and add a number.
Assign the mother colony a number. Then you can use 001-C-1, and it will refer to coral #001, First generation frag. Just define what you mean by each C1 vs C2 vs. C3, and make it very clear on your web site.

Hope this helps.

It will help with book keeping as well I'm sure.

I will choose CC for Captive Clone

what about trying to include the generations captive stock acquisition date in the coding ?

like #001-CC05-1 or CC05.5-1 if it was aquired more near to the middle of the year

heck just put the actual aquired date

#001-CC2/22/05-1 ....captive clone aquired 2/22/05 1st year generation

If I sold a Mariculter Clone

001-MC2/22/05-1

If I sold a captive cloned mariculter

001-CCM2/22/05-1 :)
