I am going to the Middle East on business.
I return via KLM airlines which has a 20.5 hour return including plane change in Amsterdam.

I am 30 minutes from the airport and it will take me 30 to clear customs and immigration.

If I see some neat coral and or fish and they are property packed by someone who does export and I get him to do it just before my plane leaves and take them with me in my checked baggage, Will they Live?

I am familiar with CITIES and will verify whether export is possible from the country of origin.

Quick replies please as I am leaving Tuesday.

Thank you!

Considering fish and corals routinely travel for periods of 24+ hours it should not be a problem.

Wayne,

I bring back shrimp from time to time with me from overseas. I haven't ever had a problem, but I carry enough paper work with to ensure that I have everything possible. Most of the times the customs guys look at you like your crazy when you tell them you have a few aquarium animals and just send you on your way. Once in a while they send you down to Ag. inspection and those guys laugh at you and send you on. I have yet to have my animals inspected.

I would think that in Canada you guys would have 100X more red tape than we do.

The most importnat thing is, does your entry point have a live animal (i.e. USFW) facility that clears them. YOu better call and ask lots of questions. Normally you have to give USFW 48 hours notice your coming in with live animals. Fill out a form, blah, blah, blah.

I never check them, I always carry them on my person on in my backpack. It limits the size but makes it much easier. Last time I was in Hawaii I brough back a nice fish. Had it dropped off at the airport right before I left, I think they were watching me, they saw me leave the terminal and pick up a brown bag from a truck and reenter. Lets just say I was searched for while, they seemed pleased when they finally saw what I was picking up and sent me on my way.

Checked baggage? No. They might even be frozen.
Hand-carried in styro? Sure, if packed in enough water, a little buffer added, and O2 is added to fill the bag up. Biggest worry would be punctured bags.

Thanks guys for the input.

Mike I don't know why I said checked because I meant carry on.

I have been invited to do some diving and to visit Basra Iraq which is under British control. The diving will be great but I may decline Basra.

Thanks again. Let you know if I come across some different critters.

Corals are not permitted from The Red Sea (Middle East)
It would be nice to imagine you extending your visit being held in some third would prison, But then again if that were to happen , we would never learn of your big anouncement concerning MAC. {and were already growing tired from holding our collective breaths  Speaking of turning blue, limiting your plunder to fish would be wise. Although the chances of finding Oxygen to fill your container would be slim to nil. Having not only a purple tang , but all the fish turn purple from a lack of Oxygen would be a sight to sea....coming from someone so concerned with the plight of fish from other regions.
Athough come to think of it, a purple Naesco tang is something i am sure we all have dreamth about from time to time on this board

Find a source of Pure Oxygen and you'll be fine.

Actually,
My thoughts were simply will it be legal...period.
Rare is there a case where any wild thing can go out or come in without export/import paperwork worth more then the animal.
And...a USFWS import permit is also required...or the Canadian counterpart.
Otherwise, one could simply 'handcarry' a few gemma tangs or clarions in the overhead compartment a tourist.

I met a hobbyist back in Germany some years ago that told me how a few small frags had been smuggled into that country from the Red Sea. The frags were successfully propagated and passed on many times. It's hard to see the great harm in something like that so perhaps Wayne can pull off a similar feat. Go for it Wayne, a good attorney like you should be able to talk himself out of a jam. Good luck.

Thanks to the smuggling of the Pueblan milksnake out of the Puebla region of Mexico, he species is now safe.
The primary habitats are under concrete now .
There was no program during this time of suburbanization of the zone to propagate them. Its likely they would have become extinct or endangered. Thanks to the smugglers, they are now superabundant....albiet in captivity.
