Spawner,
Why thanks for the point and shoot forms.
The only bump in the road are the registration fees and costs. Even presenters must pay their own way on everything @ M.O.
My goodness....if they did that at MACNA and IMAC we wouldn't have many at all!

It costs about a thousand dollars to do M.O. again. ..and I've done em since 2002.
I'll submit an abstract and hope it gets accepted. Teaching flame hawk fisherman this summer to collect flame hawks without bashing in the corals may count for something.
Sincerely, Steve

Steve, I guess we don't all get the student rate. Scientific meetings normally have a lot more expenses/attendee compared to a hobby meeting. I wish they could get the registration down to a few hundred for everyone. I am all for someone grabing this meeting away from WAS and making a more hobbyist (less pricey) friendly meeting or at least where people can afford to come. Its needs to moved outside the US next time as well. Somewhere in SE Asia or Aust. would be nice. I don't really like traveling to the desert. The trick is to get the academics to come to MO and skip other meetings. I thought that UF did a good job with the second meeting and the first one was great as well. Having it combined with WAS was not the best thing last time for attendance.

Do you know if Cruz is coming? Sounds like he has been really busy.

I think the combinding with WAS is the only thing keeping MO alive at this point.

I may make it to the next MO. but the cost may be too much as the 2-3K it would cost me would best be spent on getting equipment and suppplies to do the mariculture work here than attending the conference.
If I get sponsored to go then expect to see me.

Unfortunately I'll have to back out of MO this year. I've really enjoyed the previous sessions. I've switched work around in my lab, and now I really have to be here during that time. Crap, and I'm only a 4 hour drive away.

I to agree that as a speaker it is difficult finding a way to get your expenses paid for. I've been fortunate in finding sponsors. I think if MO is going to be successful they need to attract non-speakers to come to float the bill down the road.

Boy do I wish I could be there. I'll miss you all,
Adam

Adam, shame on you. I was hoping to take some of your money in a few friendly games in a few weeks.

Fees like that are very typical of science meetings, it is sad that more hobbyist can't attend the meetings, that is somehting they do need to look at, alhtough its really meant to be a science meeting 8O

Funny,
Its about the MO trade...but is so overloaded w/ scientists w/ expense accounts trying to figure us out from afar.
Many of their off-beat notions can be corrected if they mingle more with fish folks who handle em....... all... day... long.
Steve
PS...
Then again , the fish folks seem more interested in the hapless parrotfish [charismatic issue ] then the sustainability issues. I guess its a wash.

huh, Spawners talk has NOTHING to do with "trying to figure us out from afar", and every thing to do with furthering the sustainabliity of the MO trade by offerring a better method of growing the needed first food for many marine larvae so we can actually breed more species. Much of the best and up to date information presented at MO has nothing to do with nets/cyanide/field collections/reform/etc. If your talking about that side of MO, I'm sure your spot on, but 99% of the talks I want to see, have zero to do with that though. Until some private rich person floats a budget for real net training, IMO nothing will happen in the field. How many millions have been wasted and how far have we come, er, how far far have we fallen back?

Righto then;
Yes, the care, husbandry and nutritional progress being made is exciting. It makes the trade look intelligent, well meaning and civilized.

Juxtapose it to the widely accepted and continued use of poison and crowbars to collect fishes however and we look primative and savage.

I sure wish the left hand in the trade could influence and discipline its right hand before it dooms the two.

Ha, looks can be deceiving. In the end it all comes down to money, even science. Can't do anything without money, people who really can do things (production work) generally don't get the money. The trick is marring a few people who can write with a few people who are doers, and not have egos get in the way. That is a very rare.

True that...
The golden rule has always run the business of "reform"....and been the prime directive.
The decision to do it well has been declined on a daily basis in favor of keeping the gold 'in-house'...or in this case; in office.
Field folks have been kept to a minimum and results as well....but as long as it paid well....there was no perceived problem.

Failure is lack of money. If you have money...you win.
But....this success has still not served the trade, the reefs or the fisherman....a less important issue no doubt.
