Alot of the time people get the idea that somthing is just plain illegal to take from the ocean when it isnt as well. For instance, the only corals you cannot harvest from florida waters are true sea fans, stoney corals ( with the exception of porites) and brain coral.
The rest are considered fair game as long as not more than one square inch is taken of live rock per coral., and you do not remove the mother colony entirely.

For clarification for anyone reading this thread: Harvesting of ANY stony coral species (INCLUDING Porites spp.) from Florida waters is ILLEGAL. Collection of Millepora spp. is also ILLEGAL. Collection of any gorgonians of the genus Gorgonia is ILLEGAL.

For review of what is legal to harvest and the appropriate bag limits:

Every time I go to the LFS I see huge chunks of live rock with a variety of coral (sometimes one species). Inevitablly, if the rape of the coral reefs continued, there would be nothing with the resultant decline in fish, inverts etc.
By fragging process, millions of tonnes of rock and coral are saved.

This should make common sense to every reefer concerned about the daily rape of the reefs.

you've seen people 'frag' rock ?

please show the data where you've been able to establish how millions of corals are saved

once again, as usual, you speak from your very own nether regions :?

Vitz, I assume you were having a bad day yesterday but you really don't need to run people down on this forum. The sarcasm in your first part of the post conveyed your opinion just fine. The nether regions comment is inappropriate.

Galeon your wrong. COMMON SEA FANS are the only GORGONIA that are illegal to take. Not searods, not sea balde, not encrusting gorgonians, not frilly gorgonians, dead mans finger..... ect ect.....NONE of those are considerd a sea fan under Florida laws. they may be in the same Gener but they are not all illegal. This is what is considered a sea fanunder florida law http://www.itchyfeet.org/caribreef/purplefan.jpg
BO YA BABY. :)
Next..............

I was wrong about the porites.

Do you have a link that supports this? From galleons link there are at least two:

no person shall take, attempt to take, or otherwise destroy, or sell, or attempt to sell,
any sea fan of the species Gorgonia flabellum or of the species Gorgonia ventalina, or any hard or stony coral (Order Scleractinia)
or any fire coral (Genus Millepora). No person shall possess any such fresh, uncleaned, or uncured sea fan, hard or stony coral, or
fire coral.

So confused......when did Chris say any of those were illegal to take? He clearly stated gorgonians of the genus Gorgonia. I believe you're referring to gorgonians of the genera Eunicea, Erythropodium, and Pseudopterogorgia, among others.

Co-op fish stores?
This is a perfect example of what happens when fish folk get together and share hobby perspectives tward a common goal.
I can just see how well this would work at a co-op board meeting.
