I'm in no way condoning the concept, nor do I disagree that the horse has been beaten until dead, but from a hobbiest prospective do we really think there will be many folks willing to pay $1999 for a one day dive to collect at MOST 20 ricordia ( 1999/20=$99.95 per ricordia polyp) 8O

From what they were saying you did not have to stop at the limit. If you can keep more than a recreational limit then you could possibly keep as many as 500. Plus a few days in Key West.

I was wondering what people would think of it if they did limit you to taking the rec limit but took you to all their secret spots. Would that be better? Or would it still be wrong?

I wonder who Dr.Coral realy is also? Hmmm......

I think it's best to keep any speculation to yourself. These types of things are best handled via PM. Thanks!

Can you mods please handle the dude who is consistently flying off the handle and causing the threads to get locked instead of locking every other thread?

It's getting kind of frustrating when you want to discuss something and because of one bad apple you can't. I really have no interest in carrying on the same discussion vie 6 separate IM's. Really seems like the thumb is coming down hard too lately. More locked threads than open on the first page it seems.

Sorry for the pause, I was in shock. Is anyone actually paying $100 for average Ricordea florida polyps? Most online prices are around $5 - $20.

Sorry wasnt talking about average. I was talking about ones that are pictured on Kikis site which you should be able to find 20 of those if you are out on two dives. My LFS has a freshly cut softball size piece of green nepthea for $419 and they had two last week and sold one at that price.
So it might not be the best indicators of prices. :)

there is another site that i won't name but is rather large that has mods who will close a thread when someone who may have never posted in a 2 or 3 page thread posts one time a duragatory or inflamatory statement.
anybody on that site who wants to close a thread can do it by making a negative statement about someone(without being banned, i assume just warned). i hate to see this site start to do that.
i don't understand why the individual who can't follow the rules isn't punished but everyone else who can conduct themselves in a civil manner have to have an otherwise fine thread closed over one person.

Moderating is a tricky thing. It is an attempt to strike a balance between a thread that is still viable or a thread that has become a dog pile (among other things). A balance between people who are causing trouble and people who are expressing themselves poorly. RDO staff does its best to make these determinations - sometimes we are right on, sometimes we are right on at the time but once things have cooled down the situation looks different, and of course, sometimes we are plain wrong. In the last few days there have been several threads we have decided were becoming dog piles, so we locked them
RDO staff is wary of banning people. It sets a poor precedent, and tends to make people scared to post, shutting down discussion. We also think everyone has something to contribute if only they would post in a way that doesn't rile people up just to rile people up. Banning also generates the same kind of comparisons that coraladdict made above. So, we try to use all the different avenues available to us to keep threads open and keep everyone posting. We like to go down all those roads before banning people.
Keep in mind that because someone wasn't banned doesn't mean they weren't 'punished'. In the last few days there have been very many pm's and discussions of alternatives to banning - such as asking that people not post in a particular forum where they have been causing 'trouble'.

All that said, things are being watched and lines are nearly crossed, if not crossed already. Please, if you see something that needs moderation, pm a mod or admin and don't dog pile. Letting us know makes our jobs easier and 'cleaner' while dog piling makes everyone involved in the pile look bad.

I feel I should speak up here because I'm the person who locked those threads.
First, I should say that when i started modding this forum I was requested by community members to lock threads with a quick explanation, rather than delete anything. I certainly try to wait until a thread has become a dogpile, turned nasty or gone completely off topic before I consider locking it. Sometimes I will suggest that people wishing to further discuss some aspect of the thread start again as in the "mortality" thread. Sometimes i really feel that the subject has been fully explored with many sides and opinions being posted and all that's left is people either rehashing already stated points or slinging mud, which is rarely productive. I try to give everyone their say and I am always hesitant to lock threads even if I personally don't see the value in them. However, the tone that a thread takes is very important in my decision making. As long as threads are just people disagreeing respectfully with each other, I'm not going to lock it. Deliberately inflammatory posts, however, are not conducive to rational discussion. I will continue to take this tack and hopefully we can all behave like adults and have productive conversation, discussion and debate.
That being said, I am watching certain posters and I hope they take this explanation to heart so that nothing as severe as banning need occur.
It's your community folks, you get to decide how we communicate as a group but I will step in when I see it's called for.
Thx-Jim

Now I have to chime in.

A couple of weeks ago I had an altercation with fragmaster. Some of you might have seen the thread. But to make a long story short I received multiple PMs from multiple mods and admins stating clearly that my behavior was inappropriate and I have been placed on the "watch list". Basically I told each and every mod and admin that "I WAS DEFENDING MYSELF FROM A HOSTILE MEMBER". Since then fragmaster has posted
Savethereefs, you cant possibly be a dumb as you sound guy?
as well as had altercations with other members which resulted in multiple threads being closed. And again more warnings for the fragmaster, and 5 years from now someone can search for the word dumb and there I am being called it. Do I care, no. But is it wrong, Yes.

What I am really wanting is an apology (PMs) from the multiple mods and admins that made me out to be partially responsible for the altercation I had with fragmaster. I have seen enough episodes of JAG to see a pattern forming and I am not the catalyst. And maybe God willing I can be removed from the "watch list". I have had a hard time sleeping at night knowing that my membership to reefs.org was hanging on by a thread.

I just wanted to air this out in the public forum, for I believe I was done wrong and would hope that an apology would be offered. But since I am already not sleeping for the simple reason of being on the watch list, if the apologies never come I will not lose any additional sleep.

And being that this is in the industry forum, if there is any livestock dealers that would like to do business with me and my companies please feel free to PM me.
