Gresham makes an interesting point.
"the trade doesn't support anyone them really".

Since when did the trade support anything.... either way....?
The survival problems just being in this trade may prevent a collective, responsible and generous, spirit from evolving.
It must stem from the illusions of big profits from live fish we have always heard about.
Steve

Soooooooooooooo the solution is for every industry-type on this forum and their industry friends and supporters, to for one time unite and contact the MAC Board of Directors and ask for some input into the selection of the new leader. Or, you could have Mr. Brandt do it for you.

Show some courage fellas and back up your words and lack of action with something positive, eh.

Naesco,

Thanks so much for your contributions to this thread.

Unfortunately, with absolutely zero past or current involvement in the trade of marine ornamentals there are some folks here is this community that might take your comments somewhat lightly.

I respect your efforts and hope that you continue to stay involved. All good teams have people cheering for them on the sidelines, out of play.

Warmest regards

....Newsflash...everyone.
We missed it.
All the time people were discussing what to do about this issue. Mac was busy solving the problem, Since they have already certified everyone in the Philippine tropical fish trade...and half of Indo ..... see above chart taken from the OFFICIAL website today....its over.
Certification by its very definition guarantees honesty and genuinity.
Certification is the quintessential validation of the Kosher above the bogus.
Certification means the job was accomplished and therefore the alarms can be turned off and people can relax.
CONGRATULATIONS ALL....for the support you gave for this important development.
Perhaps the director was not being fired...but retired for solving the problem.
25 certified exporters out of the Philippines fulfilling the requirements for certification is a lot of clean fish and a great note to retire on!
Victory at last...
Now everyone just chill, watch American Idol, write a get well letter to Lindsey Lohan and chill.
Steve

Ok, I'll bite. Steve, instead of watching American Idol, what do you suggest people actually do?

Ya got me...
Maybe ..."So you think you can dance?"

"Last comic standings" gonna start soon...
maybe surf the net for a new blue-er zoa frag...?

Its just un-cool to care in this time period it seems so we'd best bide our time and wait for the tide to come in.
The dis-illusionment suffered in the Cindi Sheehan event was most relevant here.[ although sumped]
Her discovery that the issues were secondary to style and turf, ego , finance and self service hit her like a ton a bricks.
Poor thing.

If you, with your finger on the pulse of the pulse of these issues, want people to care but can't point them in a direction to do something about it...

I have had it revealed to me that nothing would be funded or supported by the powers that be so long as MAC was the darling of the reform movement.
The better ideas for action generally lost out for a long time.
Now that they are in decline....fresh new initiatives in the cause of trade reform may have a chance to gain traction.
But still, there is a scramble to fill the void that will be left by MACs absorption of funds by every naive funder there was out there for 10 years.
They fueled the wrong horse in the wrong direction for a long time and must re-evaluate and allowed to save face as they re adjust.

Since the early 80's all the initiatives tending to tackle the cyanide problem and other issues relate to marine ornamentals have been implemented (99,5%) because of grants from funding agencies. Today, we can see that there are positive changes as for example better fish quality and less mortality. It is not perfect, but we must recognize that the situation has improved mainly in the Ph and Ind, this due to the work of NGOs.

The industry's contribution has been nil. Perhaps, it is time to stop thinking that the problem has to be solved by NGOs and funding agencies.... after all this is a problem that has been created by the industry. This same industry is making big money by selling aquariums, lighting systems, filtration systems, junk products, books...etc.. all these "to keep" the aquarium inhabitants alive. Time to put something back is overdue.

MAC is the last chance the industry has, no one NGO will have the support from funding agencies and relevance that MAC has. MAC's failure will bring the trade of ornamentals closer to a ban at least in some countries.

Jaime, excellent post.
Industry has done nil!
MAC with new direction could have a very positive affect on the marine trade.

However, as is evident industry continues to do nothing even though their input into the new MAC leaders might be welcome.

But Wayne!
MAC has already certified the industry as clean! Those 25 Philippine exporters are the lions share of the trade from there!!!
Case closed...problem solved...a wonderful win-win multistakeholder alliance, no?

You need to contact MAC, with other professionals and offer advice as to what attributes the new leader requires and offer to be a sounding board for the many applicants for the position.

If you and others are not prepared to do that you future postings will sound like sour grapes and you will be estopped from criticising the new leadership.

Assertions about the reduction in the use of cyanide and about the reduction in mortality in trade are pure bunk. The MAC has accomplished nothing except to Greenwash a bunch of corrupt exporters (mostly in Indonesia and the Philippines) who routinely distribute cyanide to fish collectors. Nothing has changed.

Mark my words, this will not continue. Governments in the Philippines and Indonesia are beginning to react to the problems of destructive/illegal fishing and on the terrestrial side to destructive/illegal logging. The MAC will need to prove that MAC Certified fish are cyanide-free. If they cannot then they will not be welcome anymore.

The NGOs to watch are Telepak in Indonesia and the East Asian Seas and Terrestrial Initiatives (EASTI) in the Philippines. They have programs that are involved with community-based aquaculture, and with training collectors of marine aquarium fish to use nets, pack properly, and to better handle the fish to reduce the mortality. I am providing scientific support to both EASTI and to Telapak. So is Dr. Ralph Turingan with the Florida Institute of Technology (FIT). Progress is being made. At least more progress than the MAC. Accomplishments not greenwashed Certification are what count.

Wayne,
Am I to assume that you or Reefs.org will stop the truth from being told?

I don't know anything about 'truth' but opinions are not censored on RDO. I was also wondering what Wayne meant, but not enough to ask.

hmmmm....
I think he believes the process to be Democratic and that public input is welcome. :D A noble thought.
The candidates are already known and they are of course ...as predicted here...from inside the old system and outside the aquarium trade.
The WWF calls the shots.
Steve
PS. I do talk to MAC folks often....or ex MAC folks as it were ...since they were all...er... "de-certified."
The new "professionals" are largely unknown and hard to know since they get sacked all too often as well. This shuffling the deck on the Titanic is hard to keep track of.

if you and others keep posting about future announcements from yourselves and mac that will never ever materialize, your future postings will sound like annoying little buzzes from an insignificant gnat pretending to be a serious horsefly on the proverbial ranch that is the MO industry of which you STILL know nothing about
