My old "friend" Alex who of late has been spouting off about how he collects ricordea in such a "legal / ethical" manner just got busted in the Key's for having illegal ricordea on his boat. Now he has not been convicted of anything but the word Hypocrite comes to mind.

I wonder if all these law enforcement people are surprised at Alex turned out to be just another scofflaw

We all need to stop pretending.

Hypocracy is the name of the game for the trade, whether you're specifically breaking laws or not. It's still nothing more than a profit-driven, non-sustainable, systematic exploitation of reef life for the superficial whims of the consumer masses.

Anyone in the reef-keeping/exploiting industry who claims to value natural reef habitat epitomizes hypocracy, imo.

absolutely !

i've said as much in slightly different, and mildly gentler words here before ;)

I have read alot about the concerns with Alex and Kiki. Just out of curiousity, what is it that Alex is doing that is so wrong? I have bought from them in the past and they always had nice looking stuff. She has since gone out of business and I can't find Ricordeas anywhere else! Is what she and Alex were doing illegal? I would hate to think I was supporting illegal harvesting by once buying from them.

Well he was diving in the Keys and using a hammer to chip large pieces. of ricordea off the reef. The law is a gray area right now but some say only 1 sq. inch of rock per piece. Alex despite his self serving postings to the contrary was taking fist size rocks.

Well, then what would he do, just chip the ricordeas off the rock? When I did get orders from ricordeas.net they were all small pieces with the 1" substrate. I wonder if they got in trouble and that is why they went out of business. It was like all of a sudden they were gone. I hate being had by a company that says they practice ethical harvesting, if there is such a thing. Well, now we are in the market for a new supplier of Ricordea but have had no luck finding one. I know it is a long shot but any suggestions? :D

Not sure how much of a "grey area" the law is, but according to his OWN WEBSITE he states We at Ricordeas.net, do not support illegal harvesting or commerce of such Ricordeas. Join us by not purchasing illegally harvested Ricordea and help preserve our natural resources. By law the polyp cannot contain more than 1 sq" of rock substrate, unless the polyp is aquacultured. You can easily spot an illegal harvested piece of Ricordea, by carefully looking for sponges and algae or little coral fragments commonly found in fresh pieces of live rock from Florida waters.

Ironic that he was caught with fist size rocks

Thanks, one more question though. I have heard that the Haiti Ricordea are not as "colorful" is this true or just a ploy to sell the "True Florida Ricordeas" for more? Are they all the same just from different areas?

I don't know many people that stupid; to rub it in FWC face and then keep collecting large rocks like he does. I am sure with that website, "thanking the FWC and everyone for there help" put him on the radar big time. It was just a matter of time. 10 days in jail and he'll be collecting soon enough again.

Greetin,

Bob gets all sorts of good colors.

Don't forget, you support the systematic non-sustainable exploitation of reef life everywhere just by being in the trade.

Piero, explain why is it that America's temperature has not increased during this so called man made "global warming"?
I see from your signature link , you like to error on the side of caution ....Even if the jury is still out on things like the reef trades impact and Global warming. Im glad we didn't over react during the global cooling scare of the 1970s ........nor shut down the trade when Congress blamed our trade for trawling and blast fishing.
I think you would further your cause if you offered up some examples of how the trade is denuding the Oceans resources at every collection point .
Its the exceptions to the rule which disprove blanket statements.
The fact that temperatures in America have not increased and that the USA being the biggest source of Co2 should be the warmest and have the greatest concentration of Co2. Or how Fiji, Tonga, Solomon's Vanuatu, etc., seem show no signs of your so called unavoidable ocean trade rape syndrome.

P.S I hope the cooling fall weather has made your life in a tent/tree more rewarding. remember, move your tent daily as to not disturb the animal and plant life you come in contact with! (wink)

no, I don't like fish.

Actually, on rare occasions I will have some crab, and i do enjoy Maine lobster when back east (i actually wish that species would be more invasive and become a problematic alien infestation in the pacific so we could be encouraged to control populations, yum)

But with all the mercury and other heavy metals in the aquatic food chain, I'm of the opinion that less is better. I get my omega fats from capsules. I do support fish farming of course, and anything that increases the sustainability of seafood consumption.

I think that harvesting the ocean just because we wants its pretty colors in our living rooms is far less justified than harvesting for food. Regardless, both should be done sustainably.

Kalk,
The atmosphere is in fact not broken up into isolated bubbles over each nation, so the production of C02 in the US would not create atmospheric changes that are isolated to our region. From what i understand, the air in our atmosphere flows freely across national borders. (imagines a comic strip showing a cloud of C02 waiting in line at a border checkpoint to get its ID checked out)

I'm probably just going to let you use Google for future questions with common answers. You don't need me to provide you with this type of easily-obtained information.

.

You have always been against all fishing, claiming that it is non-sustainable, and now you say that you think it should be done sustainably.

That's two different directions of opinion.

[piero] You need to adress why the temperatures in the USA have not increased over the past 100 years and why Co2 concentrations are greater in the open ocean west of the USA and lower in the middle of this great nation....after having passed over Co2 rich California.
Then maybe you will yield that the USA is actually a net C02 sink and has had little to no effect on the Planets so called warming trend.

The collection of seafood is the leading cause of marine destruction world wide. Collecting breeding size groupers, Tuna , dredging the ocean bottom like a garden tiller trawling for shrimp....
Eating fruits and vegies is the second biggest source of reef decline through soil run off and pesticide contamination.
Even eating beef and pork has its downfalls , as it is the leeding cause of reef decline in the Great barrier Reef , due to the run off from cattle farms north of the park.
Pet fish collection has no impact on the health of the worlds reefs , not even from the few places we do collect.
Marine ornamental industry collection of pet fish tkes place in only about 5 percent of the worlds tropical countries. Those few locations we do collect pet fish , the collection process is done only in a limited geographic
area. Places like Tonga ( a collection of 1200 islands). Pet fish collectors only collect from two of those 1200 islands.
Even in America, pet fish collection in Hawaii, about 98% of the fish collection takes place along a limited area representing about 2% of the states reefs.
In Florida, pet fish collection is carried out primarily in the southern most region. Miami and the Keys.

is collecting aquarium fish in the Keys responsible for why fish are dying in the red tides all up and down the west coast of the scumshine state?

Your concerns over the plight of the worlds reefs is founded.
Your culpification of each and every person in this great hobby , is silly.
