8O Sorry for the cut and paste job. It is similar to the article previously posted by Steven Pro. This was from the September issue of Pet Product News.

From what I have heard, PetSmart seems to be focused on the last part. "Analysts said that a private Petco would be outside the glare of Wall Street and could more readily close or consolidate stores". They are taking it as a victory in the race to see who can open the most stores, and think it more likely that at the very least they will slow the number of new stores opening, and could possibly even close a lot of them down.

I know that the Petco district around here is in a shambles, they don't have enough store managers to run the stores they have, and the ones they do have that are any good are being asked to do so much for so little that many of them are leaving. Last October many of the stores went weeks without receiving shipments while hundreds of pallets sat outside in the parking lot of their distribution center under tarps.

It sounds like Wally World and Target are taking it to them. I always thought Petco would outlast Petsmart.

Our sales are double Petco's. Have you been into a PetSmart with a PetsHOTEL yet? We do 20 grand a week just from boarding.

Glenn,
How long have you been with them? How does it compare to working at an independent store? Is it better or worse?

I know I *should* hate it, but to be perfectly honest I don't. It's pretty nice to get paid regularly, plus bonuses, benefits, and insurance. I got offers from both but decided on PetSmart specifically because they don't sell saltwater. I certainly miss the freedom of my own place, but I'm actually making more now with way less stress. I'll probably have my own store in the next year or so.

So Glenn, when do you think PetsMart will start to sell marines? Do you see any connections between MAC and PetsMart?

Not that I can tell. Although to be honest they do have the internal structure to be able to adapt to certification process pretty easily. So I wouldn't say never, but it would be limited in scope to a few popular species most likely. For example, the fish we carry are plan o grammed down to the tank, and the variety and assortment is static. We only change the species we offer a few times per year (if that often). We do have very little die off, although that is completel;y dependent upon who is running the department. I still think Petco would be the more likely partner though. They need niche a lot more than PetSmart does. But PetSmart is branching out into more specialized animals. We are a pilot store for selling king snakes in our district. All are captive raised and eating frozen pinkies prior to arrival in the store. So who knows, I'm just a store level schlub.

Petco is blaming its problems on the expansion of the Wally World pet department, along with Target's excursion into the pet supply business. I remember reading that this was coming. My question is this: Why would this have a negative effect on Petco and not on Petsmart? :? Could it be Petco is just using this as an excuse for other shortcomings? Whats ya think Glenn?

Sounds like an excuse to me. As a matter of fact PetSmart considers Target and Walmart to be their biggest competition, not Petco. Petsmart is pulling ahead of Petco by providing superior services. 35% of our stores revenue comes from grooming, boarding, or training. This is a huge profit center since the only "cost" is the additional payroll. (ie, no money tied up in inventory, etc.)

Anyone see the story on CNN a few weeks ago about the Petco trainer that humiliated and stressed a dog to death in it's own home?

Glenn,
Does that mean your store is selling frozen pinkies? I know that my local store doesn't and it won't knowingly sell rats or mice for snake food. So I was just wondering if that's a new direction for Petsmart in the future?

Yes, we sell the T-Rex "Artic Mice".

Global warming and the melting ice pack has made it much easier to reach the domain of the artic mice. We can only hope Petsmart's recent decision to exploit this resource will not lead to the decline of this rare species. It's the only mouse on the market that can be kept either alive or frozen in the freezer. And the sad part it is that they have no natural fear of snakes since none can survive the frozen tundra these mice call home.
