Steve,

Obviously it's an easy problem to fix, all we have to do is quit letting them use cyanide! So if the whole lot of us on RDO wish really hard, maybe while rubbing magic crystals.. you could enlist wayne and his super cubans to go over to bali & the phillipines, and I think everything would be hunky dory in a week or 2. Or maybe we could get greenpeace to run around in one of their boats yelling slogans at cyanide fishers. That will work...

Do you have something concrete to add or are you one of those that prefer to ignore the problem.

Would you prefer the government get involved or do you feel that you should be taking steps industry wide to regulate your industry.

Thank you
Wayne

I don't know how true is this, but apparently the NPA took matters in their own hands. They now restrict divers who uses compressors in their boat to catch tropical fish in Matalbis, Zambalez. They associate anyone with compressor to the use of illegal fishing. The funny part is, those NPA's are rebel group fighting the government. In other words they deputized themselves to enforce the no illegal fishing is allowed. That is according to one of our diver/supplier. OK don't shoot the messenger please.

Here is one where I agree with NIN2EGT.

A number of muniicipalities (Local Government Units-LGUs) have passed ordinances banning the use of hookah apparatus. The rational is that this
prevents cyanide fishing in deeper water. Unfortunately, it also stops MO fish collectors using nets from fishing in deeper water (to a depth of about 100 feet).

Ferdinand Cruz has been successful in convincing a number of LGUs to repeal their ordinances against the use of hookah apparatus for fishing. He also appears to be able to obtain cooperation from the New Peoples Army (NPA) and other rebel groups like the Moro Liberation Front (MLF) and the Moro International Liberation Front (MILF). This includes safe passage through rebel areas and the training of former rebels to become MO fish collectors. So, perhaps he can convince the NPA to repeal their restrictions concerning the use of hookah in the Philippines.

Wow,
They associate anyone with compressor to the use of illegal fishing
.
Where on earth does hookah diving equate with cyanide use?
There are plenty of hookah using net collecting divers in Zambales.
How can the NPAs there not know this? What are they, the new knee-jerk Greenies now?

The NPA joins the illustrious ranks of the Tonga fishery department in banning the wrong thing on account of misunderstanding the issue.
They seem to care enough to do something, but not enough to learn anything.

Some want to ban Hookah as it is seen as dangerous. Someone cares enough to wants to protect divers and and yet not enough to let them feed their families.
Hookah , the gear of choice for the Australian, Mexican, Indonesian and Philippine army of collectors is often maligned out of ignorance by new folks who just read something wrong and acted on it.
Hookah, like scuba can put you at depth.
Working at depth without training is dangerous ...you know, like driving.
In the same reasoning we would ban driving or have ...oh I don't know....drivers training and liscensing?
So, ignorant of the benefits of training divers or requiring training, lets just put em outta work? Now that hurts the divers so how is it for their benefit ?

While on a campaign to stop all untrained dangerous activity, why stop at diving?
Lets include skiing, football, rugby, skydiving, keeping lionfish in an aquarium and needlepoint knitting.
[Not to mention walking around the bush with guns in front of armed teenagers too young to exercise good judgement]
