Gresham, Thanks for addressing my concerns. There are transshippers and some wholesalers re-oxing shipments as I described. I was not making accusations against either Eric or Dave.

Peter

Great, topic for another thread as it is OT to this one ;)

Besides the point it's very well known that happens Peter, did you just learn about this?

Gresham, You are right. I am sure you know more about this than I do. Please tell us more.

You should do some research on Indo-pacific fish and their packing methods.....this would give you a huge insight into "Tight Packing".

Let me know if you want to see any of our shipments come in...you can observe if you like....or even cut open some bags if you are so inclined:)

Take care,

Eric

PS...Fridays and Monday would be the best days to see some tight pack.

Thanks for that, Eric. I have some direct experience with tight packs coming in from the Indo-Pacific, but I will also come up and check it out. Here are my thoughts regarding tight packing on importation:

1) Import shipping is, generally speaking, more reliable than domestic shipping. As a result, some would (and have) argued that tight packs are more appropriate for the animal when originally shipped to the wholesaler.

2) In speaking with exporters in some countries, I understand that some wholesalers consitently request/demand a tighter pack than the exporter is often comfortable with.

Thoughts on either of those?

On number 1, most international flights from the Philipines and Bali have fish packed for close to 40 hours, whereas most domestic flights are 24 hours or less. Even if a domestic transfer flight gets bumped, it's usually in the bag less time than international flights from these regions where fish are commonly packed tight. We have not experienced many problems with delayed flights relative to how many shipments we send out each week. Maybe 2% of the shipments we send out have a short delay.

On number 2, I can't speak for others, but we do work VERY CLOSELY with our suppliers to make sure the packing is as "Tight" as possible. We have years of testing and research as our Oregon State project shows. If they are uncomfortable, it's because they have just never shipped like that before....but fortunately, we have and had great results. So we try to communicate very well with the suppliers and give them adjustments on each shipment until we get it right. Usually it takes three shipments to dial it in as we want it when working with a new supplier. I can also tell you and everyone that we receive these shipments with 5% or less doa. We never would tolerate any mortality higher than that from any supplier.

Hope that helps.

My experience on packing is that shipments are over packed from LA/Hawaii compared to shipments from Indonesia.

So far most shipments have a very low DOA rate, almost zero even when packing is tight.

The tighter shipments do take longer to acclimatize.

I also found that shipping anemoes with no water is a far better option as the survival rate in very good and saves on freight.
