  1. Fluval 404 noise too much to bear!

I have a 56 gallon corner reef and fish tank, and ever since a media change, my fluval 404 has been making a racket. Ive tried a dozen things to get it right...all sorts of techniques to try to eliminate potential air pockets, etc....and it just won't go away. So, rather than endure the...
  2. Button polyps closed

I recently changed from regular flourescent lighting to compact pc lighting for my fish and soft coral tank. The button polyps, which had always done fine, have been closed since a few days after changing the lighting. Everything else seems to have done better. Any ideas? Thanks
  3. 9325k versus 50/50 bulb

I just bought a compact fluorescent fixture. It came with a 55 watt GE 9325k bulb, and I also bought a 55 watt 50/50 (10000k and Actinic blue) Coralife bulb. There's obviously a difference in appearance, but is there any nutritional/health difference? Also, would you keep the light on about...
  4. Lighting for fish and softies

Thanks! I have no intention of going into more challenging corals or inverts.
  5. Calcium - Kent Tech vs. B-Ionic

Anyone notice any difference between these two-part calcium/alk buffers? Anything to distinguish between them? Thanks.
  6. Lighting for fish and softies

I have a 54 gallon corner (fairly deep) tank. It's been going for about a year, and generally successful with mushrooms, polyps and leathers. It has two regular 20w 50/50 flourescents. The fixture sits directly atop the glass tank cover. Is there a simple upgrade in lighting that I could...
  7. Feather duster location

Any advice about how to locate feather dusters in a reef and fish tank, live rock, live sand? What degree of height (elevation), water flow, lighting, proximity to other corals, freedom of movement, etc.? Thanks.
  8. Dust in UV light canister

They just wrote back and answered a few of my other questions as well as this reply regarding the dust: "The UV light reacts wit the reflector causing it to oxidize. We have actually stopped using the reflectors inside the units. This is not a danger. The dust can be blown or wiped out. "...
  9. Filter media

Thanks, Len. I know it's not very highly regarded by many on this Board, but I do have a Seaclone 100 skimmer on the tank.
  10. Filter media

What would you recommend for the Fluval 404, used on a reef and fish tank...live rock, live sand, UV sterilizer, soft corals only? What has been in there is two levels (the first four compartments from bottom up) of Chemi Pure carbon, then two levels of noodles in the top four compartments...
  11. Dust in UV light canister

Wow...it did register with me that its probably not the best stuff to be playing with or cleaning out, whatever it is. It's very powder-like, fine...and as a result, of course, difficult to gather without becoming airborne to some degree. I don't recall whether there is a white liner inside...
  12. Dust in UV light canister

I opened the canister to change the bulb in my Double Helix UV sterilizer and there was a lot of white or light grey dust inside. Any idea what the dust is?
  13. Feather duster out of tube

Maybe, but water conditions are excellent and no other problems with anything whatsoever. And what happened was I was trying to move it and when I thought I was pulling the tube, it turned out I had the worm...it had been a little extended out of the tube, but then I pulled it all the way out.
  14. Feather duster out of tube

I guess it didn't like where the tube was, lodged between some rock. So, it's out. Should I do anything? There is a tang, a flame angel, blue devil damsel and a few other fish, shrimp, algae critters, lots of live rock and soft corals in the tank.
  15. When/how to change/clean filter media

I set up a 54 gallon tank 6 months ago. The Fluval 404 was filled by LFS with lots of great stuff (though I don't know what!). At that time, I was told that the filter needs changing or cleaning or new media maybe twice a year. The tank is doing superbly. It is a fish and reef tank, soft...
