  1. Variable speed wavemakers?

I was wondering if nay has experience with these: http://www.marinedepot.com/ps_ViewItem~ ...
  2. Breaking up pipe organ, any tips?

Okay did it... a week ago, followed by entire tank cleaning (everything came out) this week. So here are some tips for someone doing this next time: * DO NOT attempt to break the pipe organ in the tank. There will be a billion little red tubes in the bottom when you're done! Wish you guys had...
  3. sand or no sand?

I just got done tearing down the entire tank and setting it up again. Seems like I had to do this about two years ago. Reason is that the sand bed gets to be full of crap after while, then you get cyano bacteria then you get hair algae, then fish get ick. Well took me total of two days, cleaned...
  4. Breaking up pipe organ, any tips?

Okay I took some photos today, URLs below. As you can see it is over grown and no longer good to look at HAHA. See the top view where the cyano bacteria is growing and the hermits are taking a break from eating too much :) http://www.bellawaya.com/reef/P1000543.JPG...
  5. Breaking up pipe organ, any tips?

Hey everyone! My pipe organ has grown out of control and has reached to the top of the water like a mushroom cloud. It's so big that it has got in the way of the water flow and collects lots of waste on the top and causes cyano bacteria to grow. I will be doing some rearranging in the tank this...
  6. which pump forver behind rockwork

I've had my jig running for 2 years now. 72 gal tank, I have my return pump (800 GPH @ 4') rigged up with PVC to go down the back, T off then go across the entire back. I use a quiet one 4000 which has a 1" hookup. Take 1" PVC and then drill 64 1/8" holes across the pipes that go in the back to...
  7. trio of six lines

My six line was the best little fish... until he got big and ate the cleaners... ugh... I will have to wait until he RIPs to get shrimps again. Other than that it is my favorite fish in the tank along with the blue tang. Full of personality.
  8. Float switch experiences?

I've had a floater switch for more than a year... never fails but the only issue was the suction cup mounting has come off a few times. It did not result in a flood as I have it switching a small pump that draws water from a bucket to the side... I would worry if it was hooked up to a water...
  9. Evil conch from hell

Yeah I'm sure it ate the snail... when I pulled the two apart the mouth of the conch was inside the dead snail... it retraced only after I pull it apart a bit... only thing you get left is a dead snail face attached to the little hard round door... I have one big conch the other is smaller...
  10. Evil conch from hell

UGH! I was getting a algae problem in the reef... going on for awhile now... then I notice there were more and more dead snail shells. I thought maybe the was bad. Got 10 new snails, found 3 new corpses. The other day when I got home I notice a conch had got a hold of a snail and inserted it's...
  11. What is the best way to fight back Xenia?

The best way to fight Xenia is to put it in my tank... I tried on a few occasions to get xenia to grow but died after a few days. Can't figure it out... everyone says should be easy... maybe too much water movement... the other corals are growing just fine :)
  12. 75Gal lighting need to understand

I started with the 4x65W compacts on my 72gal. Had hard time with anemones and corals. About 6 months into it I got a 2x150W MH + 4x18w system. The anemones and corals are much fuller when the Metal Hailides are on. I think it's largely due to the shimmering effect from the bulbs being a point...
  13. MH color temp and brand

Okay... I got Ushio 14,000K lamps. WHOA... these are so much brighter then the old ones... those came with the system and are stamped Odyssa 20,000K. I guess the loss in brightness is gradual and I didn't really notice it. What I notice is these have a slight yellow tint... makes the water look...
  14. MH color temp and brand

Hello... I have been running my 2x150w 20000K double ended MH lights for about a year a 3 months or so. I think the bulb will probably need replacement soon. My question is what is the ideal color temp for reef tanks and any better or wrose experience with brands of bulbs for double ended 150W...
  15. do shrimps have long white poop?

I think what you are seeing is pieces of its shell from a "molt". Shrimps will usually molt when water conditions change drastically (like when you first put them in your tank) or just to grow bigger. When shrimps molt they leave their outter shell behind and when the antenna and legs get broken...
