  1. ENGAGED! Help me pick a tropical honeymoon paradise with ree

Congradulations! Hawaii is a wonderfull place. Crowded, a bit sterile, expensive, and a pain to get to from the East coast. But some really cool stuff to do and see. If money is no object, you may want to consider Bora Bora --breath taking. If you want to consider the Carribean, you won't see...
  2. What the heck am I doing wrong!!

It sounds like the black/gray soot may be cynobacteria (sp). I've had it in some new tanks and once in a fish tank w/ poor circulation. Lot's of water flow has always gotten rid if this gunk for me (sounds like you have plenty). You're parameters seem great, my best advise is to stay away from...
  3. Vinegar & Kalwaser

I've been using kalkwaser for years and recently saw a post about first mixing the calcium hydroxide powder with a little vinegar. I mixed a solution this weekend and noticed the powder disolved much better. What is the concensus on this technique? What are the benefits and shortcomings. How...
  4. Good Deal? Skimmer ?

Nala, Sorry, but that skimmer is a piece of junk.
  5. Newbie needs help with lighting!!!

With all the possibilities available, no wonder you (and the rest of us ) are confused. Before any SPECIFIC opinions are given, let me offer my general theory regarding marine aquaria. IMO there are only 2 ctiical elements to keeping a sucessful reef tank: First and formost is lighting. Corals...
  6. Bubble Tip Anemone

I've had my Rose(s) for over 3 yrs. It has split 3 times. (much to my friends joy) The only time my BTA moves around is when its getting ready to split. As far as feeding goes, my pair of Marrone (sp) clowns give it plenty to eat.
  7. MD, DC and VA reefkeepers

Thanks for the info. It's quite a trek up there but if its worth the trip.... By the way, has Roozens gotten any better?
  8. Iodine for coralline growth??

There are many many types and colors of coralline algea. Some live at different depths and places around the world. Maybe you just don't have any of the pink stuff in your tank. As far as the iodine goes, I'm not sure if it promtes growth or not. In my experience, blasting your tank with...
  9. Researching fish for new 180G

AS I'm sure you're aware, you are going to have to balance hardiness & aggressivness. For example, your chances of a Powder Blue surviving while the tank is young are slim to none. On the other hand, Purple Tangs can be tough as nails, but mean as a rattlesnake towards new tankmates. It's been...
  10. I want to drink some green water!

Please don't share with us what your other urges are. Da da da da da da, that all folks!
  11. If I use copper, will tank ever be safe for inverts again

There is no need to tempt fate, but .... even though aragonite or crushed coral clearly adsorbs copper, think about how minute the concentration is even after 2 or 3 water changes. The copper with continue to leach from the substrate but within a reasonable amount of time (a couple mths) the...
  12. Quick qustion

I'm not an expert but I've done exactly the same thing w/ frogspawn and no ill effects. Worst case scenario, put them together and keep an eye on them. If they don't get along, separate them. Frogspawn is tougher than it looks.
  13. Southdown sand in NC?

Sorry for the ignorance everyone, but: I've heard the rumors for mths about a source of aragonite sand from Home Depot in the form of playsand. I live in Richmond, Va. and would surely buy some of this "playsand", if in fact, it was calcium based and not just another silica sand. ( I have...
