  1. Derasa Clam mantle seperation

I have a 5 to 6 inch derasa whose mantle seems to have come unattached from the shell for about a half in section on one side. My guess is that's not a good thing. Anyone have any experience healing this type of illness? John
  2. Closed Maxima Clam

I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me with a Tridacnid question. I have a Maxima, had it for about 9 months now, and forth epast 4 days it's been closed up (mostly). There have been no new additions to the tank for months. I've spent a couple hourswatching and none of the tank...
  3. High PH B-Ionic?

Not to change the subject, but has anyone had any luck with B-Ionic? My tank has relatively high PH (8.0 in the morning, 8.5 by night time) and I tried switching to B-Ionic just recently. My calcium, unfortunately, rarely gets up to 350ppm. I cant figure it out. Using the B-Ionic two part seems...
  4. Should I clean the substrate?

Thanks Tom. That's what I was concerned about. I'm on month 5 of my first reef tank and to this point I havent done a tank change. My Nitrate has been virtually non-existant so I've never seen the need. I have finally started to build up a little phosphate (my guess is that I'm over feeding a...
  5. Should I clean the substrate?

Maybe a stupid question, but when doing a tank change in a reef tank with crushed coral substrate, should I "clean" the gravel? I'm concerned about sucking up detrivores and the like that have developed in the substrate.... John
  6. Brown slime at the base of a Sarcophyton

Had it about 3 months now. It was pretty large when i got it from my LFS but it's really gotten huge lately. It's growing at an incredible rate, I'm worried that it's going to outgrow that tank before i'd like it to :-) john
  7. Niger Trigger in a reef tank???

Opinions? Two books I have list the Niger as one of 3 "reef safe" Triggers. The only concern they mention is for eating shrimp, which I currently dont have any of (all snails and small hermits). My LFS's all seem to say any Trigger is bad for a reef.... John
  8. Feather Duster Behavior

Interesting. Yesterday mine lost all it's "feathers". Is that what you are calling the crown? It's still in it's tube and seems to stick it's head in and out a lot. Two days ago, I caught my serpent star with a leg down the feather's tube. I'm guessing he tried to eat the feather. Cant find...
  9. Brown slime at the base of a Sarcophyton

I have a large yellow sarco that's got some brown "slime" around it's base. It almost looks like it's shedding. The slime doesnt seem to be advancing and the coral looks to be in great shape. Fully expanded, nice and bright, growing pretty rapidly. Here's a picture of what I'm talking about...
  10. SPS corals that I can keep under power compacts

I understand your comment Tom. My post, perhaps, was phrased incorrectly. The real issue is that I'm not particularly certain at what rate light attentuates through the water in my tank. Because I have PC's lighting and it's not as bright as MH, I'm guessing that any SPS corals would need to be...
  11. Calcium & Carbonate Hardness + Kalkwasser part 2

You can really treat the two as seperate things.. at least I do. The point of dripping the Kalwasser is so that the PH doesnt rise rapidly (the effect if you just dumped it in the sump). If you're dosing, i dont think you'll see a noticable change in either PH or alkalinity. I dose Kalwasser...
  12. SPS corals that I can keep under power compacts

Are there any? I'd just like one or two to throw in some variety. Currently I have 4 96W power compacts (2 daylight, 2 blue) on a 75G (48x24x16) tank. I have some nice spots on top of the live rock that would be in about 6 inches of water if placed there. thanks! John
  13. Advanced Aquarist's author list: now public!

Do you think Mr Delbeek could tell us where he got that shirt he's wearing on the back of volume 2? Not THAT is something to write about! Sign me up! John
  14. Keeping calcium levels

I cant seem to get my calcium levels to go about about 380 ppm. Currently I'm adding daily Liquid Calcium (Kent) and dosing Kalkwasser about every 3 days. My coraline growth seems to have slowed dramatically too. I also seem to have and ever decreasing alkalinity problem. I need to add buffer...
  15. Help with a toadstool

So lets assume its the change in photoperiod. My guess is I just resume the normal photoperiod and it will adjust? No need to "compensate" for it? thanks! John
