  1. is all white sand non-silicate based?

I have had absolutely no luck trying to get southdown sand here in kentucky. I have found one other brand of white sand, made by oldcastle. their website was totally useless. I have searched the bag, with no sign of the 'warning, contains silicate' label, and the garden shop manager was...
  2. non fish store sand?

I was talking to someone who claimed to have a sand bed of aragonite which he bought at Lowe's. The only sand I can find there seems to be silicate based. Is there a certain company that makes a calcium carbonate based sand (as opposed to silicate), which can be bought from some place besides...

  5. Whats books do you suggest to buy

John Tullock has had the best books I have read about the reef system. Also Sprung recently released a coral book with great pictures, and nice little schematics for corals (were to put them, flow, hardiness, aggression, lighting, and even how to pronounce their names).
  6. Tips, tricks, how to for building custom sump

A ready made 40L is probaly going to be the easiest way to do that, but if yo uwant to build it, here's another idea. I made a 85g corner tank in my house out of wood, with only the front being glass, tank, top, light, stand, and filter all togther set me back $83.47. If you don't mind only...
  7. can you diy mh ballast or buy it at light wholesale maybe?

Although you probably won't be able to get them at Home Depot, you should have a lighting store in town with a commercial department through which you can get the stuff for halide lights, the main difference between the $20 halide bulbe (which you can get at Home Depot), and the $100 you see in...
  8. Need help with ecosytem setup

Our sump is an ecosystm mud system. although we just made it ourselves to their specifications. A 20gallon tank and some plexiglass was s lot cheaper than what they wanted to send us. The only thing I don't understand is the bioballs on the side where the pump is, it's a little odd to me, I'd...
  9. Is Starphire Glass do you recommend it or not?

I have not heard of an entire starfire glass, but am sure it would be very expensive. Oceanic uses starfire glass for their glass tops. The main idea is that it will not suck out UV light from your full spectrum bulbs like regular glass will (or at lest not as much), if you look at it from the...
  10. Of additives and activated charcoal

Activated charcoal will most definately drain all your trace elements out of the tank. If you want some sort of chemical fitration, there are a numver of companies that make synthetic resin beads which will specifically bind nitrogonous wastes, and not your trace elements, I have used Seachem's...
  11. Best place to buy Live Rock

The florida rock I have seen tends to be dense, bouldery sturr which ends up costing a lot more per volume, even when it's cheaper by pound. The best prices I have found for rock has been through ffexpress.com. have known a number of people who have ordered from there without disappointment...
  12. Need help with ecosytem setup

We have a 75 which started out with a 330gpj, but moved up to a 500gph on a 20gallon sump. I actually liked the 300gph pump better. We have other powerheads in the reef for water movement. I figure increased contact time with th algae helps breakdown of wastes, and unless you are using a...
  13. Miracle Mudd... Anyone using it?

I wrote a slightly longer post on the other thread, but in a short, more concise version, I'll try to say what happened again. Have had a 75 reef up for 15 years, about 8 or 9 months ago put on the miracle mud sump, tank has definately nover looked better, clearer, corals more open, etc. Have...

  15. Miracle Mud. Is this stuff worth getting?

Just to add my 2 cents worth. I work in a pet store, which has a 75 gallon reef that has been set up for 15 years. For most of the time, it has been run on powerheads, and a protien skimmer. 8 monthe ago we decided to put ecosystem's miracle mud sump on the system. The first month was a...
