The whole no hitchhikers thing sounds a bit odd. Did ya order your LR from somewhere or purchase from LFS? I've had a 125g reef running for around 7 months and I'm STILL finding new HHs all the time. I've pulled out 2 mantis shrimp and theres still a third hiding in there somewhere (which...
Don't know how any of my tank cleaners go with your puffer or tang, but in my 125g reef currently have
1 sea cucumber (cleans the bottom like a champ, but make sure if ya get one he isn't a tank nuker <can release toxins and kill everything in tank>)
1 Sand sifting star (seems to get along...
Thanks for reply Cygnus.
Not too sure about the sand causing filtration issues. I rinsed it several times before putting it in.....and was able to fill the tank entirely, and add LR without even a minor cloudiness. It is fairly fine though as you stated and will probably not be optimal for...
Thank you all for the information! He is currently in the new tank with a few pieces of refugium rock and the hermit that was quarantined (It was either in to the new tank or pitch him out) so Godspeed and GL to the little guy.
2 more questions though for those who suggested DSB. Will I run...
recently removed mantis shrimp from 125g reef and thinkin of setting up 20g species tank for him (sorry bout cross posts). Can anyone give advise regarding these guys. Seem kinda interesting but i don't know much about them as far as 1) Are they worth (fun to watch/worth the effort)...
Also posted on this in hitchhiker forum (sorry didn't know correct place and trying to find answer asap).
Earlier today finally got mantis shrimp hitchhiker out of the reef yay!!
Was just in process of converting a 20g from freshwater and curious about mantis shrimp for species tanks. How...
This is more of a celebration than anything lol but I have a few questions also. Had a hitchhiker Mantis Shrimp come along in a large shipment of LR and been about 2 months of trying to catch him. He was too light for the trap......too elusive for the net....and then today finally got him in...
I recently removed a larger red leg (white white and black spot all over him)
hermit from my 125g reef for messing with my sand sifting star. Early off he was fine but after a few weeks each time the star would surface the hermit would leave his little cave and sprint over for a snack. You...
Agreed w/ Chris. You have way too much in there too early on. Your tank isn't yet capable of cycling all the waste your inhabitants are producing.
As far as the sally lightfoot i've never ventured that path but I've heard nothing but negatives about them in reef tanks.
My personal experience...
:D their behavior is funny. I have 2 and the larger will follow you around the tank and everytime my roomate or i feed or perform tank maintenance he will persistently attempt to bite our hand until it's removed from the tank....especially when ya get close to his anemone.

When I got mine home after a few weeks he shed his slime coat as well. Scared me at first but he looked better than ever around 3-4 days later. As far as the infection the two previous posts sound as good and gentle a method as any for removal.

Currently dose 2 part b-ionic alk/calc as needed and all other lvls seem to maintain so far. Also weekly water change (about 15 gal. in a 125 gal. tank) as well and that helps keep lvls balanced all around.
