  1. 15G nano, Ecosystem40 or BakPak?

FWIW, Rob, I had a red slime problem for months with the Ecosystem 40 (IIRC, when you posted earlier, I mentioned I had a similar set - up 46g bowfront). I used the product "Red Slime Remover" at the beginning of January, and in 2 days all the cyano as gone. Did some small water changes, etc...
  2. pistol shrimp

Mitch, What about "bullseye" pistol shrimp? I've got an orange spotted goby and I'm interested in this combo. The goby is well established in the tank. If you were me, would you try to get a "tiger" pistol shrimp or one of the other species? Thanks, -Todd
  3. Need help finding resources in nyc...

AS this site will tell you, http://www.manhattanreefs.com/index.htm most people don't have a very high opinion of stores in the 5 boros. There are, however, several quality stores in Long Island, Westchester, Stamford, CT. and New Jersey that reefers seem to prefer. I visited New York...
  4. Things that eat cyanobacteria

I've been looking at eTropicals "build your own" packages to deal with my own cyano problem, and they claim that Fighting Conchs, cerinth snails, scarlet hermits, and dwarf zebra hermits will eat it. Now, I haven't ordered any of those yet, because I already have a half dozen of eTropicals...
  5. Pic of my 46 Reef

I've seen the remora as touted as a good fit for our size tanks, but I'd rather spend the money on new lights ( I've got a 96 watt PC smartlight, which I suppose is comparably to what you have. I was looking into a 150W PFO HQI mini-pendant, which some people assured me would be more than ample...
  6. Pic of my 46 Reef

Thanks, Rob! I have the same freakin' problem re: evaporation with the ecosystem. I have to add at least a liter a day in order to keep up. It makes going away for even 2 days a PITA, as I don't have anyone around I'd want to mess with the tank. FWIW, I actually e-mailed them about it , and...
  7. Pic of my 46 Reef

Hey, Rob, very nice looking reef. I've got almost an identical set-up to you, which I've been running since August. If you don't mind, I'd like to ask you a few questions about your reef. I've got an Ecosystems refugium too, but I'm not running a skimmer. What made you choose to add the...
  8. Necrotic tissue in Sarcophyton

Bornemann and others describe the way Sarcophtyon spp. and other octocorals can become "necrotic" or "cheesy". I bought a "creamy yellow" colored Toadstool this week, and there are some spots on it that look darker yellow than others. Is this the "cheesiness?" I'm not certain the coral is...
  9. Picture of my Lawnmower Blenny

Hi, I've got a 46 gallon with 75 lbs of live rock. I own an algae blenny (my first fish!) and i love him as much as you guys do yours. Such an entertaining fish. Do you think I could keep an escenius bicolor in there as well? I saw a great one at the LFS the other day. I know it's not a...
  10. do emerald crabs eat sps?

More to the point, do Mithrax eat LPS? I catch mine on my Torch Coral (euphyllia glabrescens) all the time, and although I chalked up one dead head to a tank-cleaning accident, this morning he was on top of another that showed no skeletal damage but suddenly doesn't look long for this world...
  11. Miracle Mud users please red !!

I've got a similar red slime - ecosystem problem as described above. I constantly remove the slime from the rocks, run polyfilter, etc. replace water with DI water only, and I still get the slime. It's been about 4 months now. I'm NOT going to treat my tank with antibiotics, but it's getting...
  12. Advice on Euphyllia spp. Green Torch

How long did you have the torch before you added the clown, Reefguide? what type of Clown is it. Did the head accidents come before or after the addition? I'm thinking of adding clowns, either Percs or Sebae, to my tank, with the hope of them hosting in the Torch. I want to make sure the...
  13. LFS on Long Island???

FishTown USA also has the lowest Liverock prices of any LFS I've been to in the NYC area - by about $3/lb! They've been pretty good to me there - probably because I bought my set-up there. One of the guys is more apt to tell you the bad news ("don't buy that for your setup") than the others.
  14. Paracheilinus filamentosus - A bully!?!?!

I recently added a filamented flasher wrasse (it was actually sold to me as a "Carpenter's wrasse", but looking at photos on the net convinced me that it's actually a flasher) to my 46 gallon tank. Aside from some inverts, the only previous inhabitants were an algae blenny (such a great fish!)...
  15. Shrimp and Goby with southdown

Can you keep a pistol/shrimp goby combo with other shrimp in your tank? I have 4 peppermints.
