  1. angels in the reef

Hey ryan-lalande, I've got a Fiji Regal Angel (Pygoplites diacanthus) in my reef, and it's OK with SPS, but not with softies. He used to pick at my Nepthea but never even looks at the Litophyton (at least not that I've seen). Also picks on button polyps and clams, but only as "exploration"...
  2. Wavemakers - Suggestions?

I vote for the wavemaker option. I don't have experience with the Red Sea unit, but I used to have a Tsunami wavemaker on my tank (pretty simliar...I've since replaced my Tsunami/Maxijet combo. for Tunze Streams on a multicontroller). I think with the wavemaker option, if you already have...
  3. Live Aquaria.com

Hey Seawiz, I ordered a Swissguard Basslet from them a few months ago, and the packaging and service were awesome. They didn't have them in stock when I placed the order (even though they were on sale and I placed the order the day they were first featured on the site) but their customer...
  4. Power generators .... recommendations?

Hey Len, I've been considering this one: http://www.jehmco.com/PRODUCTS_/HARDWAR ... ystem.html Nice thing is, like a UPS, if you're not there when the power goes out, this thing comes on automatically (as opposed to a generator where you'd probably have to be there?). Read some good reviews...
  5. Southern Cali hobbyist: any good store display tanks?

Hey Len, I second the nomination for Aquarium City ( http://www.theaquariumcity.com/Displays ... 25reef.htm )...not as good as it used to be, but still pretty nice. The 120g of Tong's in Fountain Valley is OK if you like rose anemones (full of rose anemones, and they used to have a Z...
  6. Calcium reactor Q

Just make sure you've got a good CO2 check valve or other means to close off the CO2 input. Otherwise, you'll have a nice mess on your hands. ;) I don't think it'll hurt anything (except if your reactor sits too long & gets some light, it might start growing microalgaes inside it, which could...
  7. My (sort of) new website

Thanks! Yup, I'm a product of the "dot-com" fiasco. ;)
  8. My (sort of) new website

Hello All, I've finally finished my site (kind of) at www.reefalotta.com/index.html. I tend to be a bit "long-winded", so if you're actually going to read any of the content, I'd suggest setting aside a good 5,000 hours. ;) If you'd like to see the pics, there's only a few under "inhabitants"...
  9. Pacific coast chillers....where is the best place to buy?

Hey Joe, I've only seen Pacific Coast Chillers at Premium Aquatics (http://www.premiumaquatics.com/Merchant ... cificcoast). I've got a Universal Marine (really ugly but never had a problem with it) chiller and I'm happy with it (I think they're hard to find though). Hope this helps, Thomas
  10. IceCap & Marine Depot: Outstanding Customer Service

(This was also posted on another board, but wanted to be sure to let as many people as possible know :) ) Not sure if this should go in the vendor's forum, but I wanted to be sure to let as many people know about the amazing customer service I received from Andy at IceCap and also from Marine...
  11. Walt Smith questions

Hey there buff1, As far as I know, all the Pacific live rock that's collected for the hobby is collected from rubble zones (results of tropical storms) so that there's minimal impact on the environment. Kaelini is Tongan rock and is his daughter's name. Not sure exactly where it comes from...
  12. South Bay skimmer?

Yup, I've got the "6-1" one running on my 120g. I'm happy with it...it's really as easy as everyone says, and does an excellent job. It's hard to tell the difference between the Euro-reef and the Southbay (at least for me it is). The Southbays use the same pump, same impeller, and same...
  13. Metal halide UVA, UVB glass cover.

Hi Andy, It's been a while since I've taken physics, but I seem to remember that the index of refraction for most glass is sufficient to filter out most UV rays. I guess I'd look for something that's going to be relatively sturdy and relatively clear. I guess I'm a bit curious as to why you...
  14. Any experience buying from the Marine Center? Got o/source

Hi Hal, I ordered a black tang (Z. rostratum) from the Marine Center last year and would highly recommend ordering from them. First of all, I ordered what they call a "small" but my tang would probably sell as a large in most LFS's around here, so that was a very pleasant surprise (though I...
  15. Mounting SeaSwirls on EuroBracing?

Hi Mac, I did what your manufacturer suggests, which is to have holes drilled where you'd like the Sea Swirl to be. They just sit on top of the tank, and I haven't had any problems with it. Just make sure to measure correctly. Hope this helps. Thomas
