  1. Zoos shrinking, shrinking,...disappearing

I began getting worried about the asterinas when I found them munching on the tissue of my candy canes. So, I just remove them when I see them on something easy to grab.
  2. Zoos shrinking, shrinking,...disappearing

Yeah, that was a great link. I'll definitely be tuned after lights out. Only thing I can think is the vermetid snails feasting. Haven't seen them, though. I did have a problem with the little starfish. I camped out after dark and snagged about 100 of them in one week about a month ago.
  3. Zoos shrinking, shrinking,...disappearing

I don't see anything bothering them. They're not browning out either - still fluorescent green, orange, pink. Just shriveling up.
  4. Zoos shrinking, shrinking,...disappearing

That's right. All of zoos have been shrinking back to nothing over the last few months. Before that, they were spreading at a good pace. They still have their color. Some are not opening. Some have just disappeared over the last months. Do I have too much light on them? They are bright...
  5. Tiny starfish - friend or foe?

I've just started plucking them off. They don't seem to be taking anything with them when I do this. I guess I've pulled about 50 or so out of the tank so far. My candycane seems to be doing much better.
  6. Tiny starfish - friend or foe?

Exactamundo! I've started pulling them as I see them. My zooanthids appear to be hassled by something - we'll start with these guys since water chem is good. Thanks!!
  7. Tiny starfish - friend or foe?

I've got a mess of tiny (no larger than a dime in diameter) starfish in my tank. Most of them have legs missing, some have 6 or 7 legs, but they are all very small and seem to graze heavily on the rock and glass. Never see any on the sandy bottom. They seem to be increasing in number - now...
  8. The reef of ufotofu

I'm not adding anything too exotic or difficult to maintain right now. I have high hopes of moving up to a 150-200gal tank within the next year or two so I'm saving up for that. My sump/refugium/tank location is a real bugger when it comes to maintenance. I'll definitely be building a very...
  9. The reef of ufotofu

Livestock has changed a bit. First, the bad news...Doc, my surgeonfish died an untimely death late last summer. I think he had some problems from the fish store, though. I also lost a little Six Line Wrasse about a month ago. The Royal Gramma and Coral Beauty didn't do him any favors - they beat...
  10. The reef of ufotofu

Another great change I made was ditching the stock 10,000K HQI bulb that came with my Current system. I started seeing the purple corraline changing to pink and the clam was gaping pretty wide so I made a change. I now use a 250W DE 20,000K lamp by XM. I also changed the actinic T5s out. I'm...
  11. The reef of ufotofu

Well...here's my first post in many months. The tank has been on autopilot much of the time. Here's the lowdown: Finally got my Ca and Alk up. Still using Kent 2-pt solution to maintain it. Pretty simple. 5 mL every week or so. Started dosing iodine a couple months ago (Two Little Fishies...
  12. Protein skimmer efficiency question

on the intake port (left side fittings above) there is a nozzle where airline tubing connects to provide air infusion via the venturi. An air regulator is connected up to the end of the tubing. I run it about 95% open. The blue valve controls venturi:water ratio. Red gate valve controls the...
  13. Protein skimmer efficiency question

The pump is a stock Mag Drive 7 - no venturi. I have it connected to the fittings on the left via a short section of 1/2" tubing.
  14. Protein skimmer efficiency question

I see what you're saying... Here's a couple of pics of the skimmer new and what it's doing as of right now. I really need more room in my sump for a skimmer this size. I basically have a 20gal tank paritioned off using 3 baffles. The skimmer is elevated on a stand about 5" off the floor of the...
  15. Protein skimmer efficiency question

I've got a Top Fathom TA200 skimmer powered by a Mag Drive 7. The skimmer is of an older design - it produces a lot of bubbles so I have to use a 100micron filter sock to clear the water up. It's being used to skim a moderately stocked 50gal reef with a live sand bed (2-3" depth). All incoming...
