    Have you thought about biopellets in a reactor? It would help lower the nitrates and it's pretty easy and maintenance free. You do need to use a skimmer though.

    I use two MP10w on a standard 55g tank. They're set to Reef Crest, 100% but working opposite of each other.     It's a harmless sponge. Just lightly brush it off with a soft bristle toothbrush. You can buy them at a dollar store for something like 5 for a buck.
