Have you thought about biopellets in a reactor? It would help lower the nitrates and it's pretty easy and maintenance free. You do need to use a skimmer though.

I'm thinking using a fast growing calerpa sp. in the back and a few red algaes in the front. The tank will also house several anemones.

It's a harmless sponge. Just lightly brush it off with a soft bristle toothbrush. You can buy them at a dollar store for something like 5 for a buck.
