I have a hard drive (soft) crashed I believe.

The system will continue to reboot. If I start it with a Win XP disc, the system will say the partition as unkown and ask if I want to continue to format the drive.

So as this stage does that mean I cannot read anything back from that partition or there are some other software which let me go pass the partition table to read at least some directory.

Just want to see if there are software that at least let me see if there are something really important is there before I reformat it.

Thanks.

Sorry had to work quickly. First things first get a new hard drive. Replace that old one and don't plug it in. Format the new drive and then do the following. Get yourself an external drive enclosure that is compatible with your old drive. Is it SATA or IDE.

Install the drivers for the enclosure.
Install the old drive in the external enclosure and plug it into the computer and turn it on.
Create a new folder in the new hard drive and open that
After that go into my computer and access the old drive and click and drag each file you want to save to the new folder you just created. After that run a virus scan on the new folder on the new drive and make sure it is virus free.

You have just recovered your software.

I have also recovered software and files using knoppix a linux program that runs live from a CD. If you want more info on that PM me.

Wingo, I would definitely go with Brandon suggestion.
But, I would try this first before buying a hard drive enclosure. (Even though there inexpensive)

1) Still buy another hard drive.
2) Disconnect the ide cable from the old hard-drive.
3) Connect the ide cable to new hard-drive and partition. (recommend 2 partition. second partition smaller maybe 5-10GB. So you can drop your files from the previous bad hard drive.)
4) After you completed the partition, then format.
5) Install the OS (Operating System), Windows XP or whatever.

When finish the windows installation, assuming that all your hardware have there drivers installed. Connect a IDE cable to the bad hard drive and open Windows Explorer to see if you see that drive. If you do you can proceed to drag and drop those folders to the second partition or create a folder in the C: drive.

If all fails, then get a hard-drive enclosure!

Good luck

How important is the data in the hard drive.

If it is something you need to recover, I can help you by imaging the hard drive and recover most if not all files. But you will need to supply me a blank hard drive.

Let me know. The application I will be using is EnCase.

Thanks for the offer.

I have already staryted to format the partition. I don't there are really too much(there will be some for sure) important data in that partition as I have already put most of my data in and other partition. But just in case there are something I forget. Like you know, Windows and many software always default you to a directory other what you have wanted the file to go.

Just curious will the encase recover info froma formated drive?

Encase can recover deleted files as well but some may be corrupted files as well. When you delete a file, it doesn't really get deleted, the pointers to the files are just removed or changed.

Oh, I mean files in a formatted drive not just just deleting a file.

BTW, the Windows is up but I realize I do have some collection of my scanned paperworks. Well too bad. Anyway, no court case pending on those records, so I guess I can leave without.

I have to find a way to default the paperport output to a boot drive.
