My girlfriend and I were looking into purchasing a dachshund puppy. Could some locals recommend a reputable store on LI with good rates for puppies? We've visited Pets of New Hyde Park already today, but would like to compare the prices a bit. TYIA,

Go to an actual breeder, an actual good breeder will guarantee the puppies health for a year, will actually interview you to make sure you know what your getting yourself into, will show you the parents to see their temperments, can pull out lineage charts so they can prove there was no inbreeding, etc.
Or you can do something very responsible and go rescue a dog that's sitting in a shelter waiting to be put to death.

Visit North Shore Animal League, there are a lot of animals being given away because of the current economy. It would be best to adopt one from there. If they don't have the breed you want, find a breeder on the web or in the back of a dog magazine.

Don't buy dogs or cats from pet stores.

North Shore Animal League is actually five minutes away from me, that's a great idea. I was thinking of making a trip out there tomorrow.

When you guys mention breeders, do they specialize in one particular breed or will they various breeds? Any breeders you guys can recommend me to in NY?

Most breeders specialize in a certain breed. You should find one that raises the puppies in a home, they will be much more socialized and better "under foot".

Go to Barnes & Noble or Petco with a notepad. In their magazine section, find the dog magazines and look in the back at the breeder classifieds. They are sorted by state.

Good luck at North Shore, that is the best and cheapest way to get a good pet.

There are also a lot of rescue places that rescue dogs & cats. You could try getting in contact with one of them. The legal counsel where I work rescue dachshund, and other dogs & cats too. If you're interest I can see if see has one or know someone that does.

It's better to save a dog or cat live than to get one from a store or even a breeder. To many animals get put down every day.

this is my Nemo he is 5 years old and we made the mistake of "buying" him for over $600 and that was 5 years ago. We recently asked a local store how much their dachshund sell for and they are over $1200.

People should be researching a dogs and or cats breed to the same extend we research fish, corals or inverts we wish to keep. I wanted a Jack Russel but I understand from that they we very energy demanding and as they get older they may turn on my cats. I personally dont know what the previous husky experience requires but I am sure they are in place for good reasons.

Yeah I did the research and stuff, and I knew what I was getting into. But they still wouldn't bite.
BTW my Husky is doing great, very well trained and socialized. Just tends to be clingy.
