Yankees front office split over Ramirez

Manny Ramirez | Dodgers | Interested: Yankees?
There are split opinions in the Yankees front office over the pursuit of free agent Manny Ramirez, the New York Daily News reported.

Citing a source familiar with the Yankees' thinking, the newspaper reported that general manager Brian Cashman has been lukewarm to the idea of signing Ramirez, but the rest of the front office - most notably Hal and Hank Steinbrenner - believes he is precisely what the Yankees need to bolster a lineup that underachieved in 2008.

One baseball official told the Daily News that the Yankees' interest in Ramirez is more than "cursory," that they see the slugger as the perfect complement in their lineup to Alex Rodriguez.

The official, according to the Daily News, believes that the Yankees are "going hard" after Ramirez, to the point where they are willing to give him a three-year deal worth from $22 million to $25 million per year. Two other officials are skeptical that the Bombers would commit three years to Ramirez, who has already seen the Dodgers make and withdraw a two-year, $45 million offer this winter.

The newspaper reported it is unlikely that agent Scott Boras will let Ramirez sign anywhere until Mark Teixeira makes his decision.

He definitely makes their line up more fierce. But with him on the team, you have Damon, Matsui, Nady, Ramirez, Gardner (I love the way this guy plays) and Cameron or Melky. You are talking about 6 legit outfielders and only 4 can play every game.

Add the fact that Posada is coming off shoulder surgery and who knows how much he'll be able to catch. Add him to the DH mix and you have 7 guys vying for 4 slots. Obviously Gardner is the odd man out. But then you still have 2 more guys to bench.

Ramirez expects 3-year offer from Yankees

Manny Ramirez | Dodgers | Interested: Yankees?

Manny Ramirez has told friends that he is confident the Yankees will offer him a contract of at least three years, one year longer than most teams are considering, the New York Daily News reported.

The newspaper added that Ramirez, who has already turned down a two-year, $45 million offer from the Dodgers, has told friends he is seeking a four-year deal in the $100 million range. Ramirez has no plans to "get serious" about any offers until after Mark Teixeira - a fellow Scott Boras client - makes a decision regarding his own future.

Should Teixeira return to Anaheim, the Daily News said it is likely the Yankees and Dodgers figure to be the main competitors for Ramirez. But if Teixeira signs with the Red Sox, the Angels would likely throw themselves in the mix.

The newspaper said there is divided opinion in the Yankee camp over Ramirez. Hank Steinbrenner is leading the charge for the signing of Ramirez while general manager Brian Cashman "isn't too high" on the possible signing.

Yankees on periphery of Teixeira race

Mark Teixeira | Angels | Interested: Angels? Yankees? Red Sox? Orioles? Nationals?

Despite agent Scott Boras' efforts to get the Yankees involved in the Mark Teixeira sweepstakes, the Yankees remain on the periphery of the bidding, sources told New York Newsday.

SI.com reported that in the wake of Boston's decision to step away from the negotiating table, the Yankees (and Angels) were back in dialogue with Boras about Teixeira. The article also said the Yankees had discussed parameters of a possible deal with Boras.

Newsday, however, confirmed that Boras and Yankees general manage Brian Cashman talked Friday, but they said it was Boras -- not Cashman -- who initiated contact.

Pettitte likely to return to Yankees

Andy Pettitte | Yankees | Interested: Dodgers?

The return of free-agent left-hander Andy Pettitte to the Yankees is "virtually inevitable," according to FoxSports.com.

While a deal is not imminent, the website reported that the two sides will eventually come to an agreement on a one-year deal. The signing of Pettitte would likely end the Yankees' pursuit of other free-agent pitchers, namely right-handers Derek Lowe and Ben Sheets.

The Yankees reportedly have offered Pettitte a one-year, $10 million deal, but the 36-year-old lefty has been reluctant to take a pay cut from his 2007 salary of $16 million.

Go after Texeira first. He's younger and who wants Swisher as our starting first basemen?

I want Pettitte back on the team, give him 12 million for the year.

I am still mixed about Manny. Great hitter, no doubt, but can be a dog and sucks in the outfield.

The only reason I want Manny is because I know he'll give 1000% against the Red Sox. The other 143 games, who know when he's knees will hurt (apparently both knees are bad) and when he doesn't feel like playing.

If I was going to invest 20+ million a year I'd rather invest in a younger guy like Texeira.

Yankees not major player in Teixeira race

Mark Teixeira | Angels

The decision of the Angels to pull out of the Mark Teixeira sweepstakes on Sunday does not mean the Yankees are now more involved, the New York Daily News reported.

The newspaper reported that the Red Sox are once again the likely favorites to sign the high-priced free agent and Sunday's events do not point to the Yankees emerging as "serious players," according to all indications.

The Yankees have had discussions with agent Scott Boras about Teixeira, the latest a few days ago, but have yet to indicate a willingness to make the type of offer, at least eight years, $160 million, it would take to have a shot at the 28-year-old first baseman. At this point it seems Teixeira will play on the East Coast, which is known to be his preference.

The Red Sox, Nationals and Orioles have all made offers, with the Nationals and Orioles hoping Teixeira will want to play close to his Maryland roots.

I don't know what the big deal about Mark Teixiera is.He's not that good.Leave Swisher at first base and get Manny.Nobody wants Andy so that's why he's staying.I don't think he's going to get any better.People are on to his little move to first base and his move to home.My 2 cents.

Hal Steinbrenner denies Ramirez deal

Manny Ramirez | Dodgers | Interested: Yankees?

Yankees co-chairman Hal Steinbrenner told New York Newsday that the team is not on the verge of signing Manny Ramirez.

"If we are, I don't know about it," Steinbrenner told Newsday in shooting down a report out of the Dominican Republic. The Impacto Deportivo report said Ramirez "is on the verge of signing a contract for three years and $75 million" with the Yankees, and that the signing would be announced by Tuesday.

Even after general manager Brian Cashman told MLB.com the report was not true, ImpactoDeportivo.com reported Monday afternoon that it had confirmed that Ramirez would be signing with the Yankees in short order.

Jeter OK with Manny in pinstripes

Derek Jeter | Yankees

If Manny Ramirez were to end up with the Yankees, Derek Jeter is not concerned about whether the free agent slugger would have any trouble fitting in, the New York Post reported.

"We've had some free personalities throughout the years," the Yankees captain told the Post. "David Wells was his own person, [Jason] Giambi was his own person, [Johnny Damon's] his own person. There's a lot of different personalities that play on our team. It's just when you're on the field, you're trying to accomplish one thing. So you welcome people with their own personalities."
Jeter made his comments at a Central Park event for his Turn 2 Foundation.

"I don't know Manny well, off the field. I know him from playing against him. But I don't think people have problems fitting in," Jeter said. "So that won't be a headline tomorrow that I said Manny's not going to fit in fine, right?"

yeah i guess that 410 on base percetage isnt that good. as well as a guy who walks more then he strikes out, a guy who is a switch hitter, a guy who has shown that he can play in the AL East, as well as his age being 28 and by the end of his contract he will be 37 - 39 years old. did i mention he hit 33 homeruns and over 100 rbi's as well as a batting average that is hovering .300, and is a gold glover?

the point of this zany is - YES HE IS THAT GOOD. and a smarter investment for the yankees IMHO. he also is a good club house presence as was paul oniel. he could also hit in the number 3 spot to protect jeter and let arod do what he does. the next best 1st basemen is albert puljos in regards to free agency that is. and he isnt available for 3 years. so this is a smart investment. better then manny being a yankee anyday.

I agree 100%. The value a guy like Paul O'Neill brings to the table is sadly underated these days.
