I am a psychiatrist - and find that medications can be of limited (or no) value to some people.

Cowfish is completely right - there are approaches that are just as effective as medications, have shown to cause actual changes in the brain, and actually have a lower rate of relapses.

While eating right and getting exercise may help, it may also not be enough.

Frequently, our access to mental health professionals is limited by our insurance options. However, most benefits now have some number of sessions per year (anywhere from 25 and up) - so call your insurance company to clarify what you are eligible for. If you can pay out pocket (difficult in NYC), it may make a search for the right therapist easier.

Here's a link describing CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) in more detail:

Hope that helps! -Arkady

If you're talking about depression as in mental illness - aka Major Depressive Disorder or its associated ones - as opposed to having the blues once in a while, its best to speak with a mental health professional. Excersice, diet and talking are important and can often help but they are no substitute for proper therapy, which may or may not include medication. The important thing is not to be sidetracked by all the negative pop culture attitute and misconceptions. It is a disease and medications can often do wonders but they do take some time to start working and stop working so its important to follow the doctor's advice. That being said, not every person needs or benefits from medication and a medication that works on one person may not be the right medication for another, so again, try to find a good mental health professional and make a commitment to getting help. Best of luck.

A good balanced diet of "real" foods and excercise can do wonders. I've learned soo much from magazines like men's health and believe it or not "Natural Cures" by that infomercial dude. Trust me eat better, cleanse internally and excercise. Not the cure all, but if you are in poor health and were not doing these before, you will feel like a million bucks

Nelson,

Most well said here - note jackson's comment and especially note that like minded people coming together to offer advice is the foundation of why MR is MR. People here care for those who are members (contrary to what is often perceived). Keep in mind, you always have people here to chat with, relax with and shoot reef with. Great way to ease your mind of the unwanted fodder that often clogs it up.

Take good care of yourself and know that we're here for you.

I take some time to do something nice for myself and bounce things off some good friends or close family. Immersing myself in a side project. Clinical depression I have no experience with on a personal basis but professionally I try to be encouraging and supportive of people I come into contact with that have it and get them the help they need.

420 = no more depression or atleast for a few hour's, from personal experiance, not me taking or having the problem ive seen the drugs make the person worse then they was before. gain weight, become more moody. lack of drive to do thing's. i think personall u should contact someone, but when depressed or upset i buy something for the tank, keeping your mind occupied helps take your mind off other things or problems , doesnt solve them but helps to keep the situation from being a focal point

There's a common misconception that depression is all about having a bad mood or bad day. Major Depressive Disorder is disease/illness that is often as much about neurochemicals as it is anything else and telling a person to read a magazine, buy a fish, etc, while good intentioned will not help. A person with such a disorder needs medical attention to determine the proper therapy, which as mentioned by others, can include medications, talk therapy, behavioral therapy, lifestyle changes or any combination of the above. The important thing is to take the first step and make a commitment to seeing a qualified professional.

Not at all crazy. Depression is very real and very different for each individual and how it effects them and why. Though not very easily, accurately diagnosed and/or treated. Be honest with those doctors/therapists you seek help from. Also most importantly be honest with yourself and those around you. Toxic relationships between friends can magnify everything. I am a very co-dependent person, seen to me for a long part of my life as a good thing... until I realized it was because of this I was unhappy myself.

I wish you luck in finding the right "fit". When you do, you'll know it. Until then, remain strong. Know that tomorrow is another day to try again and if need be minutes pass quickly. (I've had those days where I took it sixty seconds at a time )

Zany ( and anyone going through MDD or another mental illness ) - I dont know if you're married, in a committed relationship or live with parents, but its important that they be aware of whats going on and be involved with your treatment, maybe even going with you once in a while to the doctor. I say this because a.) you will need their support and understanding and b.) they need to be aware of the symptoms involved so that they can be aware of when you might need an immediate intervention ( for instance, suidical ideation, attempts often occur in people with MDD and/or other mental illnesses and it is important that those who are in your life are aware of what to keep an eye open for, if God forbid, you do ever get to that point ). I'm not saying you are at that point but just wanted to throw that out for you or anyone else who might be reading this thread and could benefit from the info.
