There's a common misconception that depression is all about having a bad mood or bad day. Major Depressive Disorder is disease/illness that is often as much about neurochemicals as it is anything else and telling a person to read a magazine, buy a fish, etc, while good intentioned will not help. A person with such a disorder needs medical attention to determine the proper therapy, which as mentioned by others, can include medications, talk therapy, behavioral therapy, lifestyle changes or any combination of the above. The important thing is to take the first step and make a commitment to seeing a qualified professional.
