WOW I am speechless! I can't believe someone would pay that kind of cash for a frag of that coral. I just don't get it. There are a bunch of other corals with much more intense color and better shapes.

I honestly don't think this coral is actually selling for this price nor do I believe it sold for $1500 at MACNA. It's easy to have your friends "buy" from you. A few months from now you'll be getting a "deal" for $500 per frag.

$1000 means a lot for us but it might be nothing to them. we throw away some ugly corals but some ppl happy to pay for it. I'm sure some of your non reef friends think you crazy spending that much on a reef tank.

I understand what you're saying but $1500 for a tiny frag is way more than the most expensive corals that I am aware of. If someone feels this is the most beautiful coral and they must have it, more power to them. However, I feel many people are interested in "collectors" items like this because they fall victim to marketing ploys and/or wish to purchase to grow for resale.

Rich, I know the guy who bought the two frags (one was for him and one was for his friend who couldn't make it and wanted him to pick it up). The guy is a chalice nut and has all of the really crazy ones. He said that he is the 4th person to own "My Miami" which was originally just a hitchhiker until someone noticed the coloration.

While people are certainly free to spend their money and approach the hobby any way that pleases them, I do think this is an extreme example of a trend that is ultimately not a good thing. The designer coral craze really does lead hobbyists to the notion that they "need" these kind of ridiculously priced and ridiculously named corals to have a first class tank. Nothing could be further from the truth IMO. Also, the $$$ per eye idea all but assures that none of these frags will ever be allowed to grow to more than a few eyes before they are fragged and resold. The lack of colonies of any real size in the majority of hobbyist tanks these days is to me a very sad thing.

Randy:

I absolutely agree with you. There is a lot of hype going around some corals, based on pictures taken in extreme macro under blue lighting. This leads to people believing that the coral is going to look the same under their tank conditions or that they will see these colors from a few feet away once the coral is placed in their tank.

It is becoming more about acquisition of something that is hyped by others to create a market. Its nothing but a form of Ponzi scheme. Only the ones on top make money, the rest are suckers that pay. Its important to keep the fad moving.... from acros, to acan, to micromussa, to chalice, to "aussie" acros, etc.

Pretty soon all we will see is tanks with one eyed chalices, 1" sticks of acros, one mouth of acan, one poly of zooanthid......

All you need to do to obtain these super dooper ultra rare limited edition whatevers is wait... as soon as the next fad hits they're selling for $20-$50 like every other frag. 18 months ago "Nuclear Green" palys were selling for $50 a polyp. Now you can get 10 polyps for $25.
