If you notices on the con ed bill.. What's the difference between the delivery charge and serivce charge.. It seem we get charge for both... I think that's a RIP off!!!

You're not the only one ... :bagfish:

Give them a call, if you haven't done so already.

Highlight the area of the bill in question and you will see what those separate charges mean. :)

I like the conservation path- you know unplug chargers when they are not in use, buy appliances that do not have a digital or LED screen on 24/7, open the shades in the day during winter and close them in the summer. Run your dishwasher or laundry at night. I think it is cheaper.

Solar panels can actually provide power back to the grid with two way meters. There are some great advances in the technology.

My PSE&G bills are high for G&E - with a house of five some of this helps.

I'm here in Pa and have PP&L. There rates went up 30% on the generation rate only. This is due to some federal regulation of fees that expired in Dec 09. This may also be the case with Con Edison.

I work for Con Ed, and I just happen to investigate high bills.

Let me see if I can answer some of the questions that were already put on the table...

There is a difference between the delivery charge and the service charge. The delivery is really the only place where the company makes money. Electricity isn't made by Coned any more, it's purchased on the open market. That cost is then passed down to us....the customers (no I don't get a discount).

There is always a possibility that someone else is taking electricity. I know this because I work in the field looking for this exact situation. From experience, it's extraordinarily rare to find this in an apartment building, and next to impossible for a private home to take from another private home without (A) you seeing an extension cord, (B) Not noticing someone broke into your house & ran a jumper to your breaker panel. Even if it were a private home, & coned finds it, they wouldn't get involved. Primarily, it's found when someone has a 2 family home and decides to rent out both apartments & a basement. With 2 meters on location, someone has to be paying for the basement.

The cause of high bills this time of year is electric heaters & forced hot air heating systems. There are also over-estimated bills & other times when the meter reading is possibly over-read.

Make no mistake, Reef aquariums are far, and I do mean far from efficient. With the use of heaters, MH lighting, return pumps, etc., your aquarium will eat your bill.

Feel free to ask more questions......I'll try to help out the best I can.

...........E.

No the stray voltage on your pumps will not cause you bill to spike.

If you receive an estimated bill it can high based on average use.

Check out your taxes on the bill and the average KW charge- Distribution of power is a mandate from the Public Service commission and does not fluctuate from month to month, only the cost of the fuel fluctuates.

Distribution probably only accounts for about 20% of your bill- the rest is taxes and fuel cost. Most electric companies are distributors and not power generation since Deregulation.

I maybe just guessing on all this :)

I'm sure someone is just guessing this........LMAO!!!!!!

Oggisports,
Monthly fluctuations in the bills can be attributed to a few factors. Days in the monthly billing cycle, market supply charge of electricity, and personal usage.

$300-$400 is kinda high for an apartment. What kinda heating system are you running? Washers & Dryers do use a lot, but not as much as you would think given their average time being used each month. Are you running MH's?
