What happens to the pigeons sent out on those long races that don't make it the full distance? Do they just turn around and come back early?

And I understand how they get home, but how do they know where and how far to go on the outward toss? Or do you mean you just travel 500 miles with them and then toss them and hope they make it back home?

When they are just about 4 months old they will go in a screen cage for 1-2 weeks and sit there for 3-4 hours a day so they can look at all the things that are around them. In the 3 week they go out 530 am they will fly for a few min hear and there and then go in. after about 1 week they will all start to fly as a group and go routing. Which is when the stat flying N,S,E and West for 30-45 min covering a 5-10 mile span from there home. Once they have done that for 1 week i like to take them 5 miles from the coop and let them go. they will get back before me. every day they get taken more miles away. the 1 st race is in PA so i train them to NJ and then there is a truck that they go on after that witch takes them x amount of miles 2-3 times a week.

As for the ones that dont make it home the same day or come back late those birds are done away with. They will be no good for breeding true racing pigeons.

With a few 1st and 2nds place wins that birds gets mated to another that has done grate in these races as well till you billed a team of winning birds. Ive seen birds that have sold at auctions for $500 to $5000 each. Not saying you are going to breed a winner but The winning streak is in the Blood Line of the bird all ready. all it takes is 1 pair of birds to breed a winner.

I was just giving a bird sunday that has won over 15 races from 1st to 5th. Now this one i have mated on another bird that has won 5 races all 2nd places. There babies will do very well for me this race season.

Wow... should we do away with people if they're late? Would make meetings much more prompt. lol

Yeah... that's what I was afraid of... that pigeons were dying for sport. Not that I'm a huge pigeon fan, but this doesn't sit right with me.

Thanks for the general info, though. It is interesting and something I'd previously known absolutely nothing about.
