Skimmer advice

Looking to buy a skimmer for a 55rr with sump.

I am looking at either the coralife or seaclone atm, my sump has limited head room approx 24" but the back is open to stand and there is plenty of room to set it outside the sump.

1) Which to you all prefer
and
2) How oversized should the skimmer be

What is your budget? The range of skimmers for a tank that size is numerous.

I checked out the Octopus Needlewheel 110 and think it is very close to the coralife I was looking at and very close in price. If you all think it is the better Skimmer I will pay the extra 10 bucks

For the price of a new Octopus 110, I'd get a used Remora/Urchin Pro.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but you can elaborate on why you'd choose the remora's over the octopus? I'm looking for a skimmer for a 65 I just picked up and was recommended the octopus.

for the price the remora is one of the best skimmer's out, and you can use a remora as a hob or in-sump as i do

What size tank do you have it on and how heavily is your tank stocked?

on a total of about 35g with over 30 diff sps and 6 fish :wink1:, skimmer is alot bigger than i need, but preffer bigger than smaller

I used the Coralife Super Skimmer and found it to be totally inadequate on a 16g bowfront. I wouldn't use one if I were you. Find a nice used Remora and you'll be ultimately grateful. BTW, the PRO with skimmer box and Mag 5 make it a much more useful skimmer.

Remora or Remora pro for hang on. Urchin or urchin pro for in sump skimmer and if you are interested the Tunze Doc skimmers are good, I have the tnze doc9002 in my Aquapod and it works great, before that I had the remora and wanted to get away from hang on back items so I switched to the Tunze.

Yea I had the coralife for the majority of my aquarium life, but after I upgraded I bought a much better used skimmer from an online member and the difference is rediculous.

I was using the coralife 125 for years, and the DAS EX-2 skimmer took out more from my liverock and sand in a day than my old coralife did in a month (seriously). I would look out for a good one from a member used, the difference will be immense

in-sump preferably but if there is a HOB skimmer that can do a good job on a 65 gallon tank I'm open for consideration.

The Octopus skimmer with mesh and gate mods will Pwn the remoras.

On a 65 I would get a real good skimmer cause you are gonna upgrade eventually. Remoras, urchins and Tunze nano skimmers are great on small tanks, But for larger tanks I would get a nice powerful in sump skimmer

Skimmers are one of the most expensive single piece of equipment that you should pay for, or at least that is what you should consider. After a number of years in this hobby, I come to realize that what people tell you will become true after you have dumped x-amount of dollars on other products only to eventually break down and make that big purchase.
I run 2 different skimmers on separate systems and my skimmers are not even considered high end but I shelled out about $1700 for a Deltec and $1600 for an H&S. The only other single item that I thought about but did not purchase was a Solaris light.

( Sorry for hijacking ). Upgrading wont happen in the near future as I more or less maxed out on available space and wont be moving for at least two years. Are the mods for the Octopus difficult to do or require anything more than a dremel or drill? What is the octopus rated for and how is its energy consumption? Thats my main concern - i dont want to have anything that will use too much electricity.
