ok the tank is apperently brand new if you have a doc fosters and smith mag its actually http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=11425 is the exact thank the he got the 90 g sepertaly which was another 400 the tank is drilled and reef ready... i can pay 500 for just the set up or 600 for the skimmer which was a hang on the side, sump amirical,
i really didnt want to go this big at all but i feel like its a really good deal... or he just made me believe it was lol tell me what you think

brand new as in NEVER seen water? If so, does he have the overflow kits included?
or almost brand new and slightly used?
I'm not familiar with amiricle skimmers, but i'd say it probably wont cut it because most hang on skimmers aren't very efficient, unless you go to the pricy range which gets only semi efficient IMO, and $100 isn't pricy
Also, have you thought about your budget? because a 90G tank can get quite expensive to stock and I'm not sure how much you want to stock it up and with what type of corals yet.

so it's $500 for a new 90 gallon drilled tank with overflow and stand.

and for $600 you get the skimmer and sump?

it's not a great deal, it's okay.
the hood is made too low for any type of metal halide lighting, so your limited to pc lights or T-5's.
the skimmer is not great, you would end up giving it away and getting a better one. I'm not sure which model sump it is so I can't say if it's good or bad.
with some patience you can get a better deal on this site.

It's just an OK deal, wich you would have some problems with. You would be better off looking in the for sale threads, with a minimal amount of patience you will find a real good deal.

new owner

i just started up my tank and havent even put live rock in yet. im monitoring the equipment and salinity and trying to determine if it will maintain the proper temparature without a chiller. ive had experience with marine fish but will be new to a reef tank. go to as i have just to learn to: Mostly fish in Clifton, N.J. and Greenwich Aquarium in conn. from Manhattan each was about a 45 minute ride.....Youll be impressed and from what I experienced they are very helpful and knowledagble even if they know your not going to buy something when your there.

yea its an ok deal but not the best. as for wood stands which you can always stain to make the rest of your furniture.. i have seen a few in the last few months. a guy out in nj was selling one not to long ago. if i can find the PM i will let you know but don't hold me to it. i think ming said something about the low top, i would go with t5 lighting ;) i am a big fan but alot of people will talk you out of it.. you can basically keep any coral under them, it runs cooler, it is brighter, you can choose from many diff color bulbs and its cheaper to run(eltric bill) then metal halides. as for the skimmer you could always get a used one and the sump you can get someone on this forum to make you one that would suit your tank perfectly.

a 90 gallon is kinda big if you ask me. i feel it will cost you alot to up keep. keep in mind that you have to stock it with corals, water changes, more dosing and bigger more powerful equipment to go along with the setup. a smaller tank is usually a bit cheaper and easier in my opinion. just some advise this hobby does cost a bit of money and is a bit of a money pit. you still want some money to go shopping :D and going out. i hope im not discouraging you though because once you get everything set up you will adore it. you will find new stuff growing from your live rock all the time, your corals will glow, there are alot of cute little critters you can pick and choose from and it will be a beautiful piece in your house. this is just some advise you may want to consider. hope it helps

I am not sure if any one mentioned this, I didn't read the whole thread, but you can also go on Reef Central and usually find something there pretty cheap.
http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=2

plus it is a good resource, similar to MR, but nationwide

also just a as reference I recently sold a 220 gallon drilled tank with wood stand, ecosystem sump, Pump, heater, etc for 600. so you can definatley do better than that. but if money isn't an issue, go for it. The few bucks will not make much of a difference in the end. since it's like pouring water into the ocean anyway.

good luck,

Frank

Laurenbabe,

Another female here! Welcome to MR. I joined about 7 months ago and aquired my first reef tank during that time. It is over whelming to sift thru all of the comments, books, and desires to own a tank asap.

Have you ever owned a fish tank? I had a FW planted tank befor I got into the reef tank, so I had a little clue of what kind of effort it takes on a regular basis.

Come to the frag swap on April 15. Find a nice person to talk to and grill them about what they need to do- weekly -to keep the tank happy. And really decide if thats what you want to be doing. Other kinds of fish tanks require less demands on your time. (if you stay on this forum long enouph you'll notice that a lot of people get into a tank, 6 months later they are selling it all because they dont have time). Also the WAY you set up a tank can effect how much time it takes. --for instance if my tank did not have an auto top off, then I would need to add a gallon and a half of water to it every day-which means I would have not been able to leave for the weekend without having someone take care of the tank.

You have not mentioned how much you are willing to spend.

Fish tanks not for girls??? Ridiculous. but, I am lucky I have a husband who can lift heavy things for me if I need it. Lifting is the only limiting thing I find. But I feel that way about most things.

I recommend going to someone like Tim Aquatics - Or Tristan - Nice professional guys on this forum- pay him to set up the tank for you (with new or used stuff), just they way you want it. And then you have a professional who knows exactly how your is set up and can do emergency calls to help you when things go wronge. They can advise you on what equipement to get- so it takes the guessing game, rip-offs and bad advice out of the picture.

Lauren here is my concern for you. That tank is a nice tank and it is an ok deal but keep in mind that water, at 8lbs per gallon, plus the weight of the stand, the tank, the sump, live rock and any other equipment you place in that area. What kind of building do you live in? will the floor handle that kind of weight, which way do the floor support beams run in the building? To properly distribute the weight of the tank you should go across multiple beams. Construction of the building is heavy timber (wood supports in the floor) or is the floor concrete supported by steel beams in the floor.

It would really suck to have a great tank set up then have it end up in your downstairs neighbors bedroom or living room. :)

You can go this route if you want to, but half the fun and satisfaction of my tank is setting it up myself. If you've never done it before, you can have someone give you a hand, but you can do most of it on your own with a little guidance.
