It mostly depends on the species. The dwarves can be in a smaller tank but the larger species will need larger tanks. I had two H. Reidi in a 29 gallon a couple years back and it worked out great. One other thing is the height of the tank is a big factor. From what I read the taller the better. Check out seahorse.org it is an excellent site to answer all your questions before you take the plunge into seahorses. Good luck!

Hello there Chris.
You can keep one seahorse in a much smaller tank that that. Actually a smaller tank is better for seahorses as it is easier for them to find or catch food. They are used to just hanging around waiting for food to come to them. You can watch them doing that out on the east end of Long Island. They will just hang onto a blade of seagrass and catch whatever goes by. You can easily keep one or two in a ten gallon tank. They live in mated pairs but you can just as easily keep one.
