I'm trying to decide on the types of pumps to use for the closed loop. What kind of flow should I have for a 40 gallon? I'd like to have mostly soft corals and maybe a few stoney corals.

I was thinking about getting the Blueline 30HDX - 960gph. At around 4' and 3 elbows it is approx 700 gph. Is that too much flow for this size of a tank?

I'm not sure what to use for the sump. Maybe a Mag7. Any ideas?

For a soft coral tank it is probably more then necessary, but nt more than can be used. I would use the 30HDX. The mag 7 would make a good return pump.

Thanks. From what I've been reading having the ability to create more flow is better than not having enough. I read the 60 gallon cube post from way back. I think you used the same pump. How did it work out for you Wazzel? BTW- Do you have a tank setup now? Also, why did you choose to use a sequence pump? Because of the flexibility of flow and the durability of the pump?

I used the panworld 40hd one size up. It worked well. I no longer have the tank. It got wiped out by Katrina then I moved. Just finished selling it off. Planning a larger tank at this time. I chose the sequence because they have a good track record and it was in the range of flow I wanted.

Where did you get the panword pump, if you don't mind me asking? How big of a tank are you looking at setting up? I have a 100 in my garage just waiting.... I don't think my neighbor living below would appreciate the 100 though. ;) Floors are a little too thin for that amount of weight.

I got it from Premium aquatics. It is a blueline for some reason they had dual labeling. I am looking at a 120-150 size. I was hoping for a 150, but I forgot to budget for a few items that may make me go for the 120 or put it off for a bit longer.

Here are some of the pics of my 40 aqua system. I'd still like to get some opinions on what to do with the built in sump area. Most of the pics are of the built in sump.

Filesize was too big. Another try.

And a couple more closeups of the sump.

so what did you end up doing in your tank? I just got a 30 gallon Aquasystem and am trying to figure out how to set up the filtration.

Phoenix. I went crazy and lost my mind. Here are some links - from my DIY stand, DIY canopy, to my DIY sump, and the finished product. To bad the electrical in my apt is all screwed up. I still haven't set the tank up yet   . I guess it was a blessing in disguise though. The current heat wave would have killed everything!

If you look through the thread there should be a bunch of links to the stuff I did on the tank. I would say this about my closed loop. I wish now that I had gone with even more flow capability. I went with a 1150gph blueline and with 4 nozzles and my plumbing its just not enough. Any other questions let me know.

Huh? - Thats almost 30x turnover with the closed loop alone right??

Or are you talking about the type of flow it'll give? - If so, go with an OM Super Squirt or something similar..

Diver-

Yes, you are correct about the type of flow. The turnover is good, but the actual pressure output at the 4 nozzles is very, very low. I put some little plasic flags in the empty (but full of water) tank during my leak testing to see what the flow in the tank is like. I think it needs a little more ooomph. The OM Super Squirt may be a good choice. Although I worry about moving parts and salt water. I've had 1 overflow 8O , and prefer not to have another! :D

Fair enough.. - I've never used them yet, so I can't give an "informed" opinion on their reliability. - But I also watch the boards pretty regularly and so far I've never seen/heard of anyone having that issue with an OM..

I have used SCWD's for a while though.. - They're pretty leak safe, but they'll also gobble up some flow on you too. Up to 50% if you mount them in a bad spot. They seem to work best when theres <0 backpressure on the inactive port. Pretty much means they have to be above the water line.

Hope you get something worked out.. - I'd like to see some pics of it up and running. :D
